Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
Code    Conditions which Generate this Code    System Response
E098(1) Engine Prelube Override     The prelube override switch has been activated. The engine has started without completing the engine prelubrication.     The code is logged.
338-5 Engine Pre-Lube Pump Relay : Current Below Normal     The engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects an open circuit at the prelube pump relay.
The ECM detects a short to battery voltage at the prelube pump relay.     The code is logged.
338-6 Engine Pre-Lube Pump Relay : Current Above Normal     The ECM detects a short circuit at the prelube pump relay.    The ECM can lubricate the engine before cranking. This prelube may increase the life of certain engine parts by lubricating the parts before the starting motor is engaged. The prelubrication system is activated when the keyswitch is turned to the START position. The system prevents the starting motor from engaging while the pump builds pressure in the engine oil system. After a short time, the starting motor is allowed to engage. The keyswitch must be left in the START position for the duration of the prelube cycle. The engine will then be properly lubricated before start-up.The engine will start without proper lubrication. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position from the START position. Turning the keyswitch back to the START position will bypass the prelube cycle. In order to record the instances of improper lubrication, the event code E098 is generated whenever the prelubrication system is bypassed.A test on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) allows the technician to activate the prelube system. The test is functional when the engine speed is 0 rpm. The test is accessed by selecting the following menus on Cat ET:

"Diagnostic Tests"
"Override Parameters"

Location of ECM connectors
Thoroughly inspect the ECM connectors J1/P1 and J2/P2. Inspect all of the other connectors in the circuit for the prelube system. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.

Terminal locations of the prelube relay
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Check the customer connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are coupled and/or inserted. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion, and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The connectors and wiring appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - There is a problem in the connectors and/or wiring.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Check for Active Diagnostic Codes
Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Monitor the active diagnostic code screen on Cat ET. Check and record any active diagnostic codes.Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the diagnostic codes to become active.Expected Result:No diagnostic codes are active. Results:
OK - No diagnostic codes are active, but a problem is suspected in the prelube system. Proceed to Test Step 6.
Not OK - A -6 diagnostic code is active at this time. Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - A -5 diagnostic code is active at this time. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 3. Create an Open at the Connector for the Prelube Relay
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the connector for the prelube relay.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Proceed to the "Diagnostic Overrides" screen on Cat ET.
Activate the prelube system.Note: Monitor the "Active Diagnostic Codes" screen on Cat ET.
Check for a -5 diagnostic code for the prelube relay.Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the diagnostic codes to become active.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.Expected Result:A -5 diagnostic code is now active for the prelube relay. Results:
OK - A -6 diagnostic code was active before disconnecting the connector. A -5 diagnostic code became active after disconnecting the connector. The harness and the ECM are OK. The problem may be in the prelube relay.Repair: Temporarily connect a new prelube relay to the harness, but do not install the new prelube relay. Verify that there are no active diagnostic codes for the prelube relay. If there are no active diagnostic codes for the prelube relay, permanently install the new prelube relay. Clear any logged diagnostic codes.STOP
Not OK - A -6 diagnostic code remains active. There is a short between the connector for the prelube relay and the ECM. Leave the connector for the prelube relay disconnected. Proceed to Test Step 5.Test Step 4. Create a Short at the Connector for the Prelube Relay
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Install a jumper wire between terminal 85 and terminal 86 of the connector for the prelube relay.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.Note: Monitor the "Active Diagnostic Codes" screen on Cat ET after installing the jumper wire.
Proceed to the "Diagnostic Overrides" screen on Cat ET.
Activate the prelube system.Note: Monitor the "Active Diagnostic Codes" screen on Cat ET.
Wait at least 30 seconds for activation of the -6 diagnostic code.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position. Remove the wire jumper.Expected Result:A -6 diagnostic code is active when the jumper wire is installed. A -5 diagnostic code is active when the jumper wire is removed. Results:
OK - A -6 diagnostic code is active when the jumper wire is installed. A -5 diagnostic code is active when the jumper wire is removed. The engine harness and the ECM are OK.Repair: Temporarily connect a new prelube relay to t
