Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: The bearing has a locating tab. When the bearing is viewed from the flywheel, counterclockwise rotation is required for the installation of the upper half of the bearing. Ensure that the tab is properly seated in the groove. Ensure that the tab does not break in the groove.Note: If the main bearing cap bolts were removed, use a tap in order to clean the threads in the cylinder block prior to the installation of the bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 100 20 N m (75 15 lb ft).

Install thrust plates (7). If necessary, carefully pry the crankshaft in order to roll the thrust plates into position in the cylinder block. Note: On the G3606 Engine and the G3612 Engine, install thrust plates (7) on the Number 7 main bearing for the rear driven equipment. Install thrust plates (7) on the Number 1 main bearing for the front driven equipment.Note: On the G3608 Engine and the G3616 Engine, install thrust plates (7) on the Number 9 main bearing for the rear driven equipment. Install thrust plates (7) on the Number 1 main bearing for the front driven equipment.

Put clean engine oil on upper main bearing (6). Use Tooling (E) in order to roll upper main bearing (6) into the cylinder block. Note: On the G3606 Engine and the G3612 Engine, the Number 4 main bearing journal does not have an oil hole. Tooling (E) cannot be used in order to roll the upper main bearing (6) in the cylinder block. Push the upper main bearing (6) in position with your hand.Note: On the G3608 Engine and the G3616 Engine, the Number 5 main bearing journal does not have an oil hole. Tooling (E) cannot be used in order to roll the upper main bearing (6) in the cylinder block. Push the upper main bearing (6) in position with your hand.

Use a clean cloth to wipe lower main bearing (5) and the bore in main bearing cap (4). Ensure that there is no thread lubricant on lower main bearing (5) or main bearing cap (4). Install lower main bearing (5) in main bearing cap (4). Ensure that the tab on the back of lower main bearing (5) is engaged with the slot in main bearing cap (4).
Put clean engine oil on lower main bearing (5). Be sure not to put the engine oil on the back side of lower main bearing (5).
Use Tooling (A) in order to position main bearing cap (4).
Ensure that dowel (8) engages with the hole in the cylinder block. The dowel should extend 10.0 0.5 mm (0.39 0.020 inch) from main bearing cap (4).

Install nuts (3) and the washers to studs (2) in order to hold main bearing cap (4) in position. Remove Tooling (A) from main bearing cap (4).
