Information:
Table 1
Diagnostic Trouble Codes That Relate to the Idle Shutdown Feature
J1939 Code Code Description Information
593-31 Engine Idle Shutdown has Shutdown Engine One of the following conditions has occurred:
The idle shutdown timer has shut down the engine.
The PTO shutdown timer has shut down the engine.
592-31 Engine Idle Shutdown Timer Override The operator has overridden the idle shutdown timer by operating the clutch pedal or the service brake pedal. Programmable Parameters"Idle Shutdown Time" - This "Timer Parameter" can be programmed for any period from 1 minute to 1440 minutes. The engine will shut down when the programmed period of time has expired and all of the conditions are met. The idle shutdown timer is deactivated if this parameter is programmed to "0"."Allow Idle Shutdown Override" - This "Timer Parameter" can be programmed to allow the idle shutdown timer to be overridden by the operator or by the ambient outside temperature."Idle Shutdown Timer Maximum RPM" - This "Timer Parameter" allows the idle shutdown timer to be reset if the engine speed exceeds the programmed value."Minimum Idle Shutdown Outside Temp" - This "Timer Parameter" sets the minimum temperature for the temperature based idle shutdown override. The engine will not shut down if the ambient outside temperature is below the programmed temperature."Maximum Idle Shutdown Outside Temp" - This "Timer Parameter" sets the maximum temperature for the temperature based idle shutdown override. The engine will not shut down if the ambient outside temperature is above the programmed temperature.System OperationThe idle shutdown timer can be temporarily disabled by the use of the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). Temporarily disabling this feature avoids engine shutdowns when you are troubleshooting other systems. The use of this method eliminates the need to temporarily alter the programmable parameters. Set the value of the "Idle Shutdown Timer" setting to "Off" in order to disable the timer. Access this setting by selecting the following menu items: "Diagnostics", "Diagnostic Tests" and "System Troubleshooting Settings". Be sure to set this parameter to "On" before returning the engine to service. The idle shutdown timer is activated when all of the following conditions are met regardless of the position of the parking brake:
The vehicle speed is 0.
The engine is not under load.Driver Alert Function - The check engine lamp rapidly flashes for 90 seconds before the programmed time expires. The check engine lamp rapidly flashes for 30 seconds before the programmed period of time if the programmed period of time is "1" minute. During this time period, the following conditions can disable the timer:
The clutch pedal is depressed.
The service brake pedal is depressed. The Engine Control Module (ECM) shuts down the engine but not the vehicle electrical system when the idle shutdown timer expires. The "Engine Shutdown Output" can be used to shut down the vehicle electrical system when the idle shutdown timer expires. If the following diagnostic code is active, the "Idle Shutdown Timer" will not operate.
Table 2
Diagnostic Trouble Code That Deactivates the Idle Shutdown Timer
Suspect Parameter Number (SPN) Failure Mode Identifier (FMI) Code Description
84- 8 Wheel-Based Vehicle Speed : Abnormal Frequency, Pulse Width, or Period Test Step 1. Verify Activation of the "Idle Shutdown Timer"
Access the "Configuration" screen on Cat ET.
Record the value of the "Idle Shutdown Time" parameter. The "Idle Shutdown Time" must be between 1 and 1440 minutes. The idle shutdown timer is disabled if the "Idle Shutdown Time" is programmed to 0.
Record the value of the "Allow Idle Shutdown Override" parameter and the "Idle Shutdown Timer Maximum RPM" parameter.
Start the engine. Allow the engine to warm up until the coolant temperature is at least 38 °C (100 °F). Turn off any unnecessary engine driven accessories. Allow the engine to operate at the programmed low idle. The "Idle Shutdown Timer Maximum RPM" can be programmed to allow the timer to be reset by increasing the engine rpm above the programmed limit. Ensure that the accelerator is not being depressed so that the rpm increases beyond the programmed limit.
Verify that the following conditions exist:
Ensure that the status for "Vehicle Speed" on Cat ET is 0 km/h (0 mph).
Ensure that the engine speed on the status screen is at "Low Idle".
Ensure that the clutch pedal is not depressed. Ensure that the brake pedal is not depressed.
Ensure that the status of the PTO On/Off switch is Off.
Observe the "Idle Shutdown Status". Expected Result:Result 1 The "Idle Shutdown Status" indicates "Counting".Result 2 The "Idle Shutdown Status" indicates "Not Active".Results:
Result 1 - The ECM is reading the proper conditions for the activation of the "Idle Shutdown Timer". Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result 2 - The ECM is not reading the proper conditions for activation of the "Idle Shutdown Timer". Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 2. Verify the Driver Alert Function for Idle Shutdown and the Override Function for Idle Shutdown
Access the following menus:
"Service"
"Configuration"
Record the value of the "Idle Shutdown Time" parameter. The "Idle Shutdown Time" parameter must be between 1 and 1440 minutes. If the "Idle Shutdown Timer" is programmed to 0, the timer is disabled.
Program the "Idle Shutdown Timer" to 1 minute for this test.
Observe the following items during the 30 second period before the programmed shutdown time:
Check engine lamp
Idle shutdown statusNote: The following action must be accomplished while the check engine lamp is flashing.
If the "Allow Idle Shutdown Override" parameter is programmed to "Yes", perform either of the following actions in order to override the shutdown:
Press the clutch pedal.
Press the service brake pedal.
Program the "Idle Shutdown Time" parameter to the value that was recorded earlier. Expected Result:During the 30 second period before the scheduled shutdown, the status changes from "Counting" to "Driver Alert" and the check engine lamp flashes rapidly. If the "Allow Idle Shutdown Override" is programmed to "Yes", the "Idle Shutdown Status" changes to "Override" after the pedals are depressed.Result 1 The idle shutdown timer behaves in the manner that is described above.Result 2 The check engine lamp did not flash during the alert.Result 3 The ECM did not sense
