Engines Which are Programmed with the Engine Shutdown System (ESS) Option

CARB emissions film for Caterpillar C7 and C9 On-highway Engines
Illustration 2 g01440179
CARB emissions film for Caterpillar C13 and C15 On-highway Engines
The engine is subject to idling restrictions if the engine is equipped with one of the preceding films. The configuration that meets the certification for engine emissions is programmed at the factory. This configuration restricts idling by shutting down the engine at the following intervals:
5 minutes (when the parking brake is activated)
15 minutes (when the parking brake is not activated)
30 minutes (while a regeneration of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) is occurring)The amber warning lamp will flash for 30 seconds prior to the engine shutdown. During this time, the timer for the engine shutdown will reset if any transition of the following components occurs: clutch, brake, parking brake and accelerator pedal.A shutdown will occur when the following engine conditions exist:
The vehicle speed is zero mph.
The temperature of the engine coolant is at least 60° F.
The power take-off switch is in the OFF position.Note: The emissions parameter is factory protected. The emissions parameter can not be changed.Note: If the parking brake is not configured with the engine control module (ECM), the engine will shut down at 5 minutes or less. The timing of the shutdown is based on the parameter for the idle shutdown timer.Engines Which are Programmed with the Clean Idle Option
Illustration 3 g01719253Note: The emissions parameter is factory protected. The emissions parameter can not be changed. An engine which displays the film which is pictured above is programmed to Clean Idle. The film is located on the upper left side of the hood of the truck. The configuration that meets the emissions certification for the engine is programmed at the factory. This configuration uses engine software in order to reduce the emissions level of NOx to 30 grams per hour during idling. The "CHECK ENGINE" lamp will not flash prior to the elevation of the idle. In certain operating environments, the idle rpm may automatically rise to an rpm as high as 1200 rpm.

The maximum idle rpm depends on the model and on the altitude. The maximum idle rpm for a C13 On-highway Engine occurs at 2195 m (7200 ft). The maximum idle rpm for a C15 On-highway Engine occurs at 2440 m (8000 ft).
Each of the following conditions must be met in order for the idle rpm to increase.
The idle timer reaches five minutes or the idle timer reaches 15 minutes. (based on the parking brake)
The ambient temperature is above −4° C (25° F).
The engine is idling below 1200 rpm.
The altitude is below 2195 m (7200 ft) for a C13 engine.
The altitude is below 2440 m (8000 ft) for a C15 engine.
The engine is not regenerating.
The engine load is light (less than 50 N m (36.8 lb ft)).The timer starts when the following conditions exist:
The speed of the vehicle is zero.
The clutch is not depressed.
The brake is not depressed.
The accelerator is not depressed.
If the transmission is an automatic transmission, the transmission is not in gear .
The controls are not in dedicated power take-off mode.
The coolant temperature is above 10° C (50° F).The timer resets if the vehicle speed is greater than the speed which is programmed as the "Idle Vehicle Speed Limit". The timer resets if the clutch, the brake, or the accelerator is depressed.
