Diagnostic Trouble Codes
CDL Code    J1939 Code    Code Descriptions
(code descriptions may vary)    Comments
2417-5     626-5     Ether Injection Control Solenoid : Current Below Normal     The code is latched. The code is logged.
Ether injection is disabled.
2417-6     626-6     Ether Injection Control Solenoid : Current Above Normal     The code is latched. The code is logged.
Ether injection is disabled.    The ether injection system improves cold weather starting of the engine. The ECM controls the ether injection system. The ether injection system is enabled when all of the following conditions occur:
The configuration parameter is enabled or the configuration parameter is set to continuous flow.
The intake manifold air temperature is less than 0 °C (32 °F) or the engine coolant temperature is less than 0 °C (32 °F).
Engine speed is greater than 0 rpm and less than 50 rpm below the low idle speed.
No diagnostic codes are active for both the engine coolant temperature sensor and for the intake manifold air temperature sensor.

Troubleshooting Test Steps    Values    Results
1. Check the Harness Connectors
A. Verify that the keyswitch is in the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the harness connector for the ether solenoid.
C. Check the harness connector for debris and for corrosion.

Loose connection, damaged connector, or debris
Result: The harness connector was not free of debris and/or not free of corrosion.
Repair or replace the damaged or corroded connector.
Verify that the problem is resolved.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step
Result: The harness connector was free of debris and free of corrosion.
Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Create an Open at the Harness Connector for the Ether Injection Solenoid
The ether canister must be removed prior to performing this procedure.
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Remove the ether canister.
C. Disconnect the engine harness connector for the ether control.
D. Connect a digital voltmeter across the two terminals on the engine harness connector for ether control.
A test on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) allows the technician to activate the ether system. The test can be activated by selecting the "Diagnostic Overrides" screen on Cat ET.
E. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
F. Measure the voltage across terminal 1 and terminal 2 of the harness for the ether injection solenoid.
    Wiring and harness
Result: The voltage measurement is 0 VDC after activating the ether injection system.
There is a problem in the harness. Repair the harness or replace the harness.
Verify that the problem is resolved.
Result: The voltage measurement is equal to battery voltage after activating the ether injection system.
There is a problem in the solenoid. Replace the solenoid.
Verify that the problem is resolved.
Complete the procedure in the order in which the steps are listed. If the procedure corrected the issue, return the engine to service. If the procedure did not correct the issue, Contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
