Test Step 1. Check for Connector Damage.
Disconnect main power.
Thoroughly inspect the ECM connectors J1/P1 and J2/P2. Inspect all of the other connectors. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors" for details.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque of 6.0 N m (55 lb in).
Check the customer connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque of 2.25 0.25 N m (20 2 lb in).
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and pinch points.Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are completely coupled and/or inserted, and the harness and wiring should be free of corrosion, abrasion or pinch points. Results:
OK - The connectors and wiring are okay. Proceed to test step 2.
Not OK - The connectors and/or wiring need repair.Repair: Repair the connectors and/or wiring or replace the connectors and/or wiring. Stop.Test Step 2. Check the Supply Voltage to the ECM while the Local Emergency Stop Switch is Active.
Install a 40-pin Breakout T between the ECM connector, P1, and J1.
Connect a voltmeter to pin 5 and pin 6 on the breakout T.
Turn the circuit breaker for the battery to the ON position.
Check that no breakers are tripped.
Turn the ECS to the STOP position.
Activate the Emergency Stop switch on the Electronic Instrument Panel. If multiple Emergency Stop switches have been installed, ensure that any other Emergency Stop switch has not been activated.
Monitor the voltage on the voltmeter.
Turn the ECS to the OFF/RESET position.Expected Result:The voltage should measure 0 VDC when the Emergency Stop switch is activated. Results:
OK - The voltage measures 0 VDC when the Emergency Stop switch is activated. Proceed to test step 3.
Not OK - The voltage does not measure 0 VDC when the Emergency Stop switch is activated. Proceed to test step 4.Test Step 3. Check the Supply Voltage to the ECM while the Local Emergency Stop Switch is not Active.
Connect a voltmeter to pin 5 and pin 6 on the breakout T.
Turn the ECS to the STOP position.
Deactivate the Emergency Stop switch on the Electronic Instrument Panel. If multiple Emergency Stop switches have been installed, ensure that any other Emergency Stop switch has not been activated.
Monitor the voltage on the voltmeter.
Turn the ECS to the OFF/RESET position.Expected Result:The voltage should measure 24 3 VDC when the Emergency Stop switch is deactivated. Results:
OK - The voltage measures 24 3 VDC when the Emergency Stop switch is deactivated. Stop.
Not OK - The voltage does not measure 24 3 VDC when the Emergency Stop switch is deactivated. Proceed to test step 7.Test Step 4. Check the Voltage at the Local Emergency Stop Switch.
Turn the ECS to the STOP position.
Activate the Emergency Stop switch on the Electronic Instrument Panel. If multiple Emergency Stop switches have been installed, ensure that any other Emergency Stop switch has not been activated.
Measure the voltage between pin 7 and the - Battery terminal on the Emergency Stop switch.Expected Result:The voltage should measure 24 3 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage measures 24 3 VDC. Proceed to test step 5.
Not OK - The voltage does not measure 24 3 VDC.Repair: The voltage at pin 8 of the Emergency Stop switch should be 24 3 VDC. If the voltage is not correct perform the following diagnostic test. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Control Switch (ECS)". If the voltage on pin 8 is correct replace the Emergency Stop switch. Stop.Test Step 5. Check the Voltage at the Coil of the Emergency Stop Relay.
Turn the ECS to the STOP position.
Activate the Emergency Stop switch on the Electronic Instrument Panel. If multiple Emergency Stop switches have been installed, ensure that any other Emergency Stop switch has not been activated.
Measure the voltage between terminal 85 and terminal 86 on the Emergency Stop relay.
Turn the ECS to the OFF/RESET position.Expected Result:The voltage should measure 24 3 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage measures 24 3 VDC. Proceed to test step 6.
Not OK - The voltage does not measure 24 3 VDC.Repair: The wire from pin 7 of the Emergency Stop switch to terminal 86 of the Emergency Stop relay needs repair or the wire on terminal 85 of the Emergency Stop relay to the - Battery terminal needs repair. Stop.Test Step 6. Check the Voltage of the Primary ECM or Secondary ECM Relay at the Coil.
Turn the ECS to the STOP position.
Activate the Emergency Stop switch on the Electronic Instrument Panel. If multiple Emergency Stop switches have been installed, ensure that any other Emergency Stop switch has not been activated.
Measure the voltage between terminal 85 and terminal 86 on the ECM relay.
Turn the ECS to the OFF/RESET position.Expected Result:The voltage should not measure 24 3 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage does not measure 24 3 VDC.Repair: Replace the ECM relay. Verify that the problem is no longer present. Stop.Test Step 7. Check the Voltage at the Local Emergency Stop Switch.
Turn the ECS to the STOP position.
Deactivate the Emergency Stop switch on the Electronic Instrument Panel. If multiple Emergency Stop switches have been installed, ensure that any other Emergency Stop switch has not been activated.
Measure the voltage at pin 1 of the local emergency stop switch.Expected Result:The voltage should measure 24 3 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage measures 24 3 VDC. Proceed to test step 8.
Not OK - The voltage does not measure 24 3 VDC.Repair: The voltage at pin 2 of the Emergency Stop switch should be 24 3 VDC. If the voltage is not correct perform the following diagnostic test. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Control Switch (ECS)". If the voltage on pin 2 is correct replace the Emergency Stop switch. Stop.Test Step 8. Check the Voltage at the Emergency Stop Relay.
Turn the ECS to the STOP position.
Deactivate the Emergency Stop switch on the Electronic Instrument Panel. If multiple Emergency Stop switches have been installed, ensure that any other Emergency Stop switch has been deactivated.
Measure the voltage between terminal
