Proceed to Test Step 4.
2. Check the Status of the Shutdown Switch on Cat ET
A. Activate the shutdown.
B. Connect Cat ET.
C. Use Cat ET to verify that the engine rpm is 0.
D. Return the shutdown switch to the RUN position.
E. Use Cat ET to monitor the status of the shutdown switch.
Switch Status
Result: The status of the shutdown switch changed states after returning the shutdown switch to the RUN position.
The shutdown switch is operating correctly. Return to service.
Result: The status of the shutdown switch does not change states after returning the shutdown switch to the RUN position.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Create a Short at the Connector for the Shutdown Switch
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the connector for the shutdown switch.
C. Create a short circuit between the following terminals at the shutdown switch connector:
- Terminal 1 and Terminal 2
D. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
E. Connect Cat ET.
F. Use Cat ET to monitor the status of the shutdown switch.
G. Remove the wire short.
Create a Short
Result: The status of the shutdown switch changed states after creating the short circuit.
Repair: Install a new shutdown switch.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: The status of the shutdown switch did not change states after creating the short circuit.
Repair: Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
4. Create an Open at the Connector for the Shutdown Switch
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the connector for the shutdown switch.
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
D. Connect Cat ET.
E. Use Cat ET to monitor the status of the shutdown switch.
Create an Open
Result: The status of the shutdown switch changed states after creating the open circuit.
Repair: Install a new shutdown switch.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: The status of the shutdown switch did not change states after creating the open circuit.
