Removing The Power Take-Off
STARTING OF THE ENGINE CAN CAUSE INJURIES TO ANYONE WORKING ON THE PTO. DISENGAGE THE CUTTER CLUTCH, SHUT ENGINE A (CATERPILLAR 3412) DOWN AND TAG THE ENGINE CONTROL BEFORE WORKING ON THE POWER TAKE-OFF.
1. Remove the drive shaft covers, remove the retainer caps and pull the U-joints off the takeup sheave shaft. 2. Remove the belt drive cover. 3. Connect the belt tensioner assembly pump to the cylinder.4. Pump the tensioner until the piston rod firmly contacts the angled plate on the takeup.5. Loosen the jam nuts on the two takeup bolts, then back the takeup bolts well away from the angled plate.6. Loosen the four bolts that hold the takeup in place until the takeup can easily slide on the support but is not loose.7. Release the pressure in the belt tensioner. 8. Disconnect the air hose from the shaft. Cap or plug all openings.9. Remove the belt bands. 10. Loosen the jam nuts, turn the two engine support bolts until they contact the rear engine supports, then tighten the jam nuts. 11. Remove the bolts that connect the P.T.O. to the engine flywheel housing.12. Attach a lifting device to the P.T.O. housing, remove the bolts from the P.T.O. foot, then pull the P.T.O. back until the clutch is clear of the drive ring. Lift the P.T.O. away. 13. If it is necessary, remove the bolts that connect the drive ring to the flywheel and move the drive ring away.Removing The Clutch From The Power Take-Off
THIS CLUTCH HAS BEEN DYNAMICALLY BALANCED AT THE FACTORY. ANY PARTS REMOVED FROM THE CLUTCH MUST BE RETURNED TO EXACTLY THE SAME POSITION WHEN THEY ARE REINSTALLED ON THE CLUTCH. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, HAVE THE CLUTCH DYNAMICALLY BALANCED BEFORE USING IT AGAIN. IF THE CLUTCH IS NOT DYNAMICALLY BALANCED BEFORE USING IT AGAIN, STAY ALERT ON THE FIRST STARTUP TO SHUT THE CUTTER ENGINE DOWN IMMEDIATELY IF ANY UNUSUAL VIBRATIONS ARE FELT OR HEARD.
The clutch hub is press-fit onto the P.T.O. shaft. To remove the clutch from the shaft a puller must be used to pull the entire clutch assembly off the shaft, or the clutch assembly must be disassembled and a puller used to pull the clutch hub off the shaft. If the clutch is not to be disassembled anyway, it is more practicable to pull the entire clutch assembly off the shaft as a unit so the dynamic balancing will not be disturbed. The following procedure is for removal of the clutch assembly as a unit, using an OTC Power Team hydraulically powered push-puller No. PPH-30 and two 1" NC male to 1" NF female adapters. A locally fabricated adapter ring can be used instead of the male/female adapters if desired. The hole pattern for an adapter ring is shown above. 1. Disconnect the air hoses from the elbows on the clutch. Cap or plug all openings immediately. 2. Mark the retainer, the retainer bolts and the hub so the retainer and bolts can be returned to the same position.3. Cut the wire from the retainer bolt heads, then remove the bolts and retainer.4. Mark the back plate and two opposite back plate bolts so the bolts can be returned to their respective holes. 5. Remove the two marked bolts, then install the push-puller.
READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS SUPPLIED WITH THE PUSH-PULLER. BE AWARE OF ANY OPERATING LIMITATIONS OR RESTRICTIONS.
6. Stroke the push-puller pump to pull the clutch off the shaft. BE CAREFUL, the clutch assembly weighs about 275 pounds.Disassembling The Power Take-Off
1. Remove the clutch (see page 4.0-4). 2. Remove the air hoses and fittings from the shaft holes and slide the sleeve off the shaft. Cap or plug all openings.3. Remove the rotating union from the end of the shaft. Cap or plug all openings. 4. Remove the nuts and pull the sheave off the shaft.5. Remove the bolts from both bearing retainers and remove the inner retainer.6. Pull the shaft and bearings out the sheave end of the housing.7. Pull the inner bearing off the clutch end of the P.T.O. shaft.8. Remove the spacer from the shaft.9. Pull the outer bearing off the clutch end of the shaft. Remove the outer bearing retainer.10. Remove and discard all bearing retainer seals and O-rings. Also remove and discard the sleeve O-ring.Assembling The Power Take-Off
1. Thoroughly clean the P.T.O. housing bearing cavity, the shaft, the sleeve, the spacer and both retainers in clean non-flammable solvent. Flush clean solvent through the air passages in the shaft, then blow the passages dry with clean dry air. Plug the openings in the shaft.2. Install new oil seals in the bearing retainers. The lips of the seals should be toward the external faces of the retainers.3. Position the outer bearing retainer on the P.T.O. shaft, then press or drive the new outer bearing onto the shaft flush against the shaft shoulder.4. Slide the spacer onto the shaft against the inner ring of the outer bearing.5. Drive or press the new inner bearing onto the shaft flush against the spacer.6. Position a new O-ring on the outer bearing retainer, insert the shaft and bearing assembly into the P.T.O. housing from the sheave end of the housing, then install the retainer bolts and lockwashers.7. Position a new O-ring on the inner bearing retainer and install the retainer on the P.T.O. housing.8. Lightly coat all the exposed shaft with silicone grease, place a new O-ring in the groove in the sleeve, then slide the sleeve onto the shaft. 9. Align the holes in the sleeve with the holes in the shaft, then install the pipe nipples and hoses.

The clutch hub is press-fit onto the P.T.O. shaft. The manufacturing tolerances for the shaft and hub are such that the fit may range from .000" clearance for the loosest fit to .0015" interference for the tightest fit. The fit of any one shaft and any one hub is more likely to be near the tightest fit than
