Table 1
J1939 Code and Description Comments
114-5
Net Battery Current : Current Below Normal The alternator is charging the starting batteries, but not charging the trailer batteries.
A wire is bad on the alternator side or a failed Isolation (ISO) relay.
The circuit is not hooked up correctly if the wiring is good.
677-5
Engine Starter Motor Relay : Current Below Normal This code indicates that there is an electrical problem with the solenoid valve and/or circuit on the starter motor relay.
677-6
Engine Starter Motor Relay : Current Above Normal This code indicates that there is an electrical problem with the solenoid valve and/or circuit on the starter motor relay.
1267-5
Idle Shutdown Vehicle Accessories Relay Driver Circuit : Current Below Normal This code indicates that the EIRS battery ISO relay current is below normal.
1267-6
Idle Shutdown Vehicle Accessories Relay Driver Circuit : Current Above Normal This code indicates that the EIRS battery ISO relay current is above normal.
4210-5
Engine Pre-lube Drive : Current Below Normal This code indicates that there is an electrical problem with the solenoid valve and/or circuit on the engine pre-lube pump.
4210-6
Engine Pre-lube Drive : Current Above Normal This code indicates that there is an electrical problem with the solenoid valve and/or circuit on the engine pre-lube pump.
5085-5
Engine Idle Management Active Lamp Command : Current Below Normal This code indicates that the EIRS active lamp current is below normal.
5085-6
Engine Idle Management Active Lamp Command : Current Above Normal This code indicates that the EIRS active lamp current is above normal.
7498-5
SLI Battery #2 Net Current : Current Below Normal The alternator is charging trailer batteries, but not charging the starter batteries.
The wire or ISO relay is bad going to the starting batteries.
7498-6
SLI Battery #2 Net Current : Current Above Normal The ISO relay has failed and is stuck closed
7748-5
Engine Starter 1 Feedback : Current Below Normal This code indicates that there is a problem with the starter relay and/or the electrical circuit on the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
7748-6
Engine Starter 1 Feedback : Current Above Normal This code indicates that there is a problem with the starter relay and/or the electrical circuit on the ECM.
7749-5
Engine Starter 2 Feedback : Current Below Normal This code indicates that there is a problem with the starter relay and/or the electrical circuit on the ECM.
7749-6
Engine Starter 2 Feedback : Current Above Normal This code indicates that there is a problem with the starter relay and/or the electrical circuit on the ECM.
9372-5
Engine Idle Management Pending Event Lamp Command : Current Below Normal This code indicates that the event beacon lamp current is below normal.
9372-6
Engine Idle Management Pending Event Lamp Command : Current Above Normal This code indicates that the event beacon lamp current is above normal.
9373-5
Automatic Start Request Inhibit Indicator : Current Below Normal This code indicates that the EIRS secondary start inhibit lamp current is below normal.
9373-6
Automatic Start Request Inhibit Indicator : Current Above Normal This code indicates that the EIRS secondary start inhibit lamp current is above normal. The applicable Electronic Control Module (ECM) monitors the current flow through the coils of the applicable components. The applicable ECM sets a diagnostic trouble code if the current flow through a coil is incorrect. These codes can be activated only when the applicable ECM is sending a command to the control valves. A -5 code indicates that the current flow through the circuit is low and there is an open in the circuit. A -6 code indicates that the current flow through the circuit is high and there is a short in the circuit.Electrical Checkouts on the Cat® Electronic Technician (ET)

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Determine if a code is active or logged.
Codes
Result: A -5 code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: A -6 code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
2. Check the Wiring for an Open Circuit
A. Verify that the harness connector is free of debris, free of corrosion, and securely connected.
B. Disconnect the solenoid from the harness.
C. Connect a jumper wire between the terminals of the harness connector for the affected coil. The coil is replaced with a short circuit.
Create a Short
Result: A -5 code became active during the electrical checkout. The ECM did not detect the jumper wire. There is an open circuit in the wiring between the coil and the ECM connector. There may be a problem with a connector.
Repair: Repair or replace the connectors or the wiring.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: A -6 code is activated during the electrical checkout. The ECM detected the jumper wire. There is a problem with the solenoid.
Repair: Replace the solenoid.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
3. Check the Wiring for a Short Circuit
A. Disconnect the solenoid from the harness.
Create an Open
Result: A -6 code became active during the electrical checkout. The ECM did not detect the open circuit. There is a short circuit in the wiring between the coil and the ECM connector. There may be a problem with a connector.
Repair: Repair or replace the connectors or the wiring.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: A -5 code is activated during the electrical checkout. The ECM detected the open circuit. There is a problem with the solenoid.
Repair: Replace the solenoid.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
