Information:

This Program can be administered either before or after a failure. In either case the decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS4372" as the Part Number and "7755" as the Group Number. If administered before failure, use "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "T" as the SIMS Description Code. If administered after failure, use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.
Some Affected Product may be eligible for "Installation of Series Fuel Filters". Refer to PS8827 dated December 27, 1996.
This Revised Service Letter replaces the March 24, 1998 Service Letter. Changes have been made to the TERMINATION DATE.
Termination Date
March 31, 2000Problem
Some Affected machines may experience high levels of soot in the engine oil. Excessive levels of oil soot can cause oil thickening and may result in excessive oil consumption and crankcase blowby. This Program has two parts. Part 1 provides Cat participation in the before-failure installation of a larger engine oil pan on Affected machines to reduce oil soot concentrations. If oil consumption and crackcase blowby measurements are already excessive, Part 2 provides Cat participation on a prorated basis for a new Remanufactured engine. The 0R8760 Engine is remanufactured to the current "emissions" version 112-9039 Engine arrangement which produces less oil sooting.
The 0R8760 Engine includes an aftercooler and wastegate turbocharger along with other related changes. This Reman engine is adaptable to all Affected 950F Series II machines equipped with earlier engine arrangements.
The 0R8760 Engine is NOT adaptable to the earlier 950F Series I machines (6YG, 7ZF) because of installation differences. Earlier 950F Series I machines (6YG, 7ZF) should use the 0R4426 engine.

These components must be transferred from the original engine to the Reman engine at time of installation.
Claim listed parts only. Charges for new coolant, temperature regulator, hoses, belts, filters, or other related parts or components deemed necessary at time of installation are not for Caterpillar's account under this PSP.
Action Required
Part 1: Oil Pan Replacement (0-6000 hours)(before failure only)
1. Before installing new oil pan, be sure to interview the customer concerning the amount of engine oil consumption and take an engine SOS sample for evaluation. Also, use a 8T2700 Blowby Meter to check and record the crankcase blowby rate. Record rpm and blowby at converter-stall condition. See Procedures for Part 1, attached. Do not install a new oil pan if oil consumption and blowby measurements are already excessive.2. Remove engine valve cover, and "flush" crankcase with clean solvent or diesel fuel, using a hand-sprayer to remove as much old oil and soot (sludge) as possible. Do NOT use gasoline. Drain solvent and sludge into container for proper disposal. All "flushing" and cleaning of inside of engine is to be done with engine "off".
Remove oil level gauge (dipstick) and guide tube to avoid damage during pan replacement.
3. Remove original oil pan (see Procedure for Part 1 - Oil Pan Replacement). Use solvent and hand-sprayer to clean inside of cylinder block and crankshaft as much as possible, before installing new oil pan.4. Install new larger 41L engine oil pan. See attached procedure for Part 1. Larger oil pan capacity will reduce oil soot concentration, and reduce the possibility of oil thickening and wear from soot in oil.5. Install 41-Liters (11 US Gallons) of multigrade Caterpillar DEO 15W40 oil, along with new 1R0739 Engine Oil Filter. The new oil pan continues to use the same oil level gage (dipstick) as the original oil pan. Do not change the dipstick markings.6. Install new Primary (outer) and Secondary (inner) air filter elements. Do not re-use the existing "used" air filter elements.7. Make a SIMS entry to indicate the engine oil pan has been replaced with the new 41 Liter pan. See example below: Part 2 - Engine Replacement (After Failure Only - If engine oil consumption & blowby measurements are excessive, per the requirements attached)
1. Refer to attached "Information and Guidelines" for Part 2, concerning engine oil consumption and crankcase-blowby. Engine must meet these requirements before applying Part 2 of this program. Take an engine SOS sample for evaluation. High SOS oil soot by itself is not sufficient justification to replace the engine.2. Install the new 0R8760 Remanufactured 3116 engine for 950F Series II, along with new exhaust elbow, air inlet hose and other parts listed. Installation information is included with the engine. The 0R8760 Engine is equipped with Series Fuel Filters. Be sure to explain to the customer that the standard Filter #1 (the longer 1R0753 Filter), should be replaced at every 250 hours at each oil change. The additional upside-down Filter #2 (shorter 1R0751 Filter), should be replaced at every 500 hours. Refer to PS8827, dated Dec 27, 1996.
3. Install new Primary (outer) and Secondary (inner) air filter elements. Do not re-use the existing "used" air filters. 4. Refer to attached information & guidelines for more information.5. After the new Reman engine is installed, check and
