2. Remove bolt (1) that holds the air conditioning lines to the engine. 3. Loosen nuts (3) on the adjusting rod. Remove two bolts (4) that hold the adjusting rod to the timing gear cover.4. Loosen three bolts (2) and move air conditioning compressor toward engine. 5. Remove belt (7) from air conditioning compressor pulley.6. Loosen clamps (5) and slide hose down on tube (6).7. Remove four bolts (8). Move tube (6) and compressor to the side as a unit. Remove water temperature regulator (9). 8. Disconnect water temperature switch (11).9. Loosen clamp (12) and remove the bolts from elbow (10). Move elbow (10) to the side. 10. Remove engine lifting bracket (13). 11. Install tool (A) in front of the cylinder block as shown. Remove four bolts (14). Tool (A) will hold the fan drive in position when the cylinder head is removed. 12. Remove bolts (16). Remove oil breather tube (15). 13. Remove the bolts that hold pipe (17). Remove pipe (17).14. Turn the valve for the fuel supply to the off position. The location of the valve is on the bottom of the fuel tank. 15. Disconnect the fuel lines at fittings (19). Remove the bolts that hold fuel filter and adapter (18) to the cylinder head. Remove the fuel filter and lines as a unit. Put protection caps on the lines and fittings. 16. Remove bracket (20). 17. Install tool (B). Fasten a hoist to the cylinder head. Remove bolts (21) that hold cylinder head in place.
Do not put cylinder head down on a flat surface. This can cause damage to the fuel injection valves.
18. Remove cylinder head (22). The weight of the cylinder head is 180 lb. (81 kg). 19. Remove gasket (23) and O-ring seal (24). Always install a new gasket between the spacer plate and cylinder block before the cylinder head is installed. See REMOVE SPACER PLATE.Install Cylinder Head
Be sure a new gasket has been installed between the spacer plate and cylinder block. See INSTALL SPACER PLATE. 1. Thoroughly clean the spacer plate and bottom surface of the cylinder head. Install new head gasket (2), water ferrules (1) and O-ring seal (3) on the hollow dowel. 2. Install tool (A) on the cylinder head. Fasten a hoist and put cylinder head (4) in position on the spacer plate. 3. Install push rods (6) and put the rocker shaft in position on the cylinder head. See INSTALL ROCKER SHAFT AND PUSH RODS.4. Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of the cylinder head and rocker shaft bolts. Install the bolts and washers and tighten the bolts as follows:Step 1. Tighten all bolts in number sequence to a torque of 115 lb.ft. (155 N m).Step 2. Again tighten all bolts in number sequence to a torque of 185 13 lb.ft. (250 17 N m).Step 3. Again tighten all bolts in number sequence (hand torque only) to a torque of 185 13 lb.ft. (250 17 N m).Step 4. Tighten all bolts in letter sequence to a torque of 22 lb.ft. (30 N m).Step 5. Again tighten all bolts in letter sequence to a torque of 32 5 lb.ft. (43 7 N m).Step 6. Again tighten all bolts in letter sequence to a torque of 32 5 lb.ft. (43 7 N m).5. Make an adjustment of the valves to have a clearance of .015 in. (0.38 mm) for the intake and .025 in. (0.64 mm) for the exhaust. See VALVE CLEARANCE in TESTING AND ADJUSTING. 6. Install bracket (7). 7. Put fuel filter (8) in position on the cylinder head and install the bolts and spacers that hold it. Connect two fuel lines at fittings (9). 8. Install pipe (10) on the exhaust manifold and install three bolts (11) that hold the pipe in place. 9. Put oil breather tube (12) in position on engine and install bolts (13). 10. Install the four bolts that hold fan drive (14) to the front of the engine. Remove tool (B). 11. Put elbow (17) and the hose in position on the water pump and install the bolts that hold it in place. Tighten clamps (18).12. Install water temperature regulator (15).13. Connect water temperature switch (16).14. Install the engine lifting bracket in the front of the cylinder head. 15. Put tube (21) and air conditioning compressor (23) in place on the cylinder head as a unit. Install four bolts (22).16. Slide hose (19) up into position and tighten clamps (20). 17. Put belt (24) in position on the compression pulley.18. Install bolts (26) that hold the adjusting rod to the timing gear cover.19. Make an adjustment to the belt with nuts (25). See SPECIFICATIONS. 20. Put the air conditioning lines and clamps (27) in place and install bolt (28).21. Fill the cooling system to the correct level. See MAINTENANCE GUIDE.22.
