Information:

Problem 1.
Oil In Cooling SystemProbable Cause
Defect in core of oil cooler Install a new core in the oil cooler.
Defect in head gasket Install a new head gasket.
Water pump weep hole obstruction, coupled with defect in water pump oil seal Free water pump weep hole of obstruction and replace oil seal.Problem 2.
Engine Coolant Is Too HotProbable Cause
Restriction to air flow through radiator or restriction to flow of coolant through the radiator Remove all restrictions of flow.
Not enough coolant in system Add coolant to cooling system.
Pressure cap has a defect Check operations of pressure cap. Install a new pressure cap if necessary.
Combustion gases in coolant Find out where gases get into the cooling system. Make repairs as needed.
Water temperature regulators (thermostats) or temperature gauge has a defect Check water temperature regulators for correct operation. Check temperature gauge operation. Install new parts as necessary.
Water pump has a defect Install a new water pump.
Too much load on the system Make a reduction to the load.
Wrong fuel injection timing Adjust the timing.
Shunt line has a defect Make repairs as needed.
Drive belts loose Adjust drive belts.
Concentration of anti-freeze too high A 50-50 percent mix is acceptable for most applications. A 60-40 percent mix is advisable for Arctic application.Introduction
This engine has a pressure type cooling system. A pressure type cooling system has two advantages. The cooling system can be operated in a safe manner at a temperature higher than the normal boiling point (steam) of water. This type of system prevents cavitation in the water pump. Cavitation is the forming of low-pressure bubbles in liquids that are caused by mechanical forces. A pressure type cooling system helps to prevent pockets of air from forming.

Boiling point of water
Remember that temperature and pressure work together. When a diagnosis is made of a cooling system problem, temperature and pressure must be checked. Cooling system pressure will affect the cooling system temperature. For an example, refer to Illustration 1. The illustration shows the effect of pressure on the boiling point of water. The illustration also shows the effect of height above sea level. The coolant level must be to the correct level in order to check the coolant system. The engine must be cold and the engine must not be running.Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual , SEBU8671, "Cooling System Coolant Level - Check" to check the coolant level.Safety
Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali. At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.Remove filler cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and radiator cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Cooling System Conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Making contact with a running engine can cause burns from hot parts and can cause injury from rotating parts. When working on an engine that is running, avoid contact with hot parts and rotating parts.
The connection of any electrical equipment and the disconnection of any electrical equipment may cause an explosion hazard which may result in injury or death. Do not connect any electrical equipment or disconnect any electrical equipment in an explosive atmosphere.

348-5430 Multi-Tool Gp (Phase 2)
The 348-5430 Multi-Tool Gp (Phase 2) is used in the diagnosis of overheating conditions and in the diagnosis of overcooling conditions. This group can be used to check temperatures in several different parts of the cooling system. Refer to the Tool Operating Manual, NEHS1087 for more information. The 348-5430 Multi-Tool Gp (Phase 2) is used to check the air flow through the radiator core. Refer to Tool Operating Manual, NEHS1087 for the test procedure for checking blowby of a cooling system radiator. The 348-5430 Multi-Tool Gp (Phase 2) is used to check the fan speed for an engine. Refer to Tool Operating Manual, NEHS1087 for the testing procedure.

9S-8140 Pressurizing Pump
The 9S-8140 Pressurizing Pump is used to pressure test the radiator filler cap. This pressurizing pump is also used to pressure test the cooling system for leaks.Check the coolant frequently in cold weather for the proper glycol concentration. Use the 245-5829 Coolant/Battery Tester Gp in order to ensure adequate freeze protection. The tester gives immediate, accurate readings. The tester can be used for antifreeze/coolants that c
