Information:
Inspect, Rebuild, or Exchange
If the engine is operated until the components fail, additional engine damage can result. Caterpillar recommends that the following components be inspected in order to ensure reliable engine performance:* Jacket Water Pump* Starter Motor* Air Compressor Caterpillar RecommendationTo minimize downtime, Caterpillar recommends the use of Remanufactured components (subject to availability) as the most cost effective option. Removal and InstallationRefer to the Service Manual or contact your Caterpillar dealer for assistance with removal and installation of engine components.Water Pumps
A failed water pump might cause severe engine overheating problems that could result in cracks in the cylinder head, a piston seizure or other potential damage to the engine.Visually inspect the water pump for leaks. If leaking is observed, replace all seals. Refer to the service manual for the disassembly and assembly procedure.Inspect the component for wear, cracks, pin holes and proper operation. Refer to the service manual or consult with your Caterpillar dealer if repair or replacement is needed.Starter Motor
If the starter motor fails, the engine may not start in an emergency situation. Caterpillar recommends a scheduled inspection/check of your starter motor. The starter motor should be checked for correct operation.Clean and check all the electrical connections on electric starter motors. Check for air leaks at all the pipe connections on air starter motors. If repairs are needed, refer to the Service Manual, or contact your Caterpillar dealer for assistance.Air Compressor
Refer to the Service Manual or refer to the OEM literature for information concerning the air compressor. Contact your Caterpillar dealer for assistance.Flywheel Ring Gear
Inspect/Check
Flywheel ring gear. The flywheel ring gear and the starter pinion must be in good condition in order for the engine to start and operate properly. The engine will not start if the starter pinion does not engage. Ring gear teeth and starter pinion teeth can be chipped because of irregular starter solenoid operation.
Starter pinion.Listen for a grinding sound when starting the engine. Inspect the flywheel ring gear and starter pinion for wear. Check for wear patterns on the gear teeth. Check for broken and chipped teeth. If damaged teeth are found, replace the ring gear and starter pinion. The starter solenoid may also need to be replaced. Refer to the Service Manual or consult with your Caterpillar dealer.Fan Drive and Belt Tightener Assembly
Inspect/Check
Fan drive pulley (1) and belt tightener assembly (2).Inspect the fan drive pulley. The bearing end play should be 0.03 to 0.23 mm (.001 to .009 in). The radial play should be no greater than 0.13 mm (.005 in). If the fan drive pulley should require disassembly, refer to the Special Instruction SMHS7001, or refer to the Service Manual for the procedure.Inspect the belt tightener assembly. Check for unusual noise and/or wobbling of the pulley bearings. Repair or replace the belt tightener assembly as necessary.Magnetic Pickup
Initial magnetic pickup inspection and adjustment is recommended at the first scheduled oil change interval.Subsequent adjustments should be made at Every 3600 Hour interval.Inspect/Adjust
The magnetic pickup is mounted in the flywheel housing.A magnetic pickup mounted in the flywheel housing functions as a speed sensor.1. Remove the magnetic pickup (1) from the flywheel housing. Check the condition of the end of the pickup. Check for signs of wear and contaminants.2. Clean the metal shavings and other debris from the face of the magnet.3. Install and adjust the pickup as described in the Service Manual.
