Check each timing pin storage location (3) for flywheel timing pin assembly (4). The correct pin is identified by the letter "F" that is stamped in the top of the bolt head of the timing pin. Remove the correct pin from storage.
Install the timing pin into the left-hand side timing port:
Remove plug (2) from timing port (1) in the flywheel housing.Note: There is a timing port for side pinning located on both sides of the engine.
Insert the timing pin into the timing port.
Use barring tool (5) and a ratchet wrench with a 34 mm socket to turn the flywheel in the direction of normal engine rotation. Turn the flywheel until the machined hole in the flywheel is aligned with the appropriate timing port:If the top timing port is used, drop the pin into the hole and slowly bar the engine over.If a side timing port is used, gently press the pin against the flywheel while you bar the engine over.
The pin will easily insert into the timing hole in the flywheel as the holes become aligned.Note: If the flywheel is turned beyond the point of engagement, the flywheel must be turned in the direction that is opposite of normal engine rotation. Turn the flywheel by approximately 30 degrees. Then turn the flywheel in the direction of normal engine rotation until the timing bolt engages with the threaded hole. This procedure will remove the play from the gears when the No. 1 piston is on the top center.
Remove the valve cover for the No. 1 cylinder head.
Illustration 6 g06084062
The inlet and exhaust valves for the No. 1 cylinder are fully closed if the No. 1 piston is on the compression stroke. With the engine having HLA's, there will not be any play in the rocker arms. In any position the rocker arms should always be tight. To verify, watch the push tubes on cylinder No. 1 and No. 7 for motion as you barred from 360 degrees from TDC. If the No. 1 push tubes are up, No. 1 is on the exhaust stroke. If the No. 7 push tube are up, No. 1 is on the compression stroke. Ensure the cylinders that will be checked or adjusted are on the correct crankshaft stroke position. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Valve Lash - Adjust (Hydraulic Lash Adjusters)".Note: When the actual stroke position is identified and the other stroke position is needed, remove the timing bolt from the flywheel. Turn the flywheel by 360 degrees in the direction of normal engine rotation.Torque specification for the timing port plug at the top of the flywheel housing: ... 100 20 N m (74 15 lb ft)
