Illustration of the Cat ET "Calibration" screen
The graph in Illustration 1 shows a locked view of the actual status and the desired status of a parameter. The view is locked and unlocked by selecting the "Hold" button. The "Settings" button controls the grid display, the data points, and the sizes of the axes for parameters, and time. The parameters are selected by using the "Parameters" button. The information in the graph can be displayed as text by selecting the "Text" button.Illustration 1 also shows the "Aftertreatment #1 Outlet Oxygen Sensor Voltage Offset" parameter. The value is changed by typing in the "Value" field. The value can also be changed by using the up arrow and the down arrow to the right of the value. After the value is entered, select the "Submit" button in order to save the value into the ECM.Adjustment Procedure for Tuning the Exhaust Emissions
Install an emissions analyzer in the exhaust stack after the catalyst.
Operate the engine at a steady state.
Establish communication between Cat ET and the engine Electronic Control Module (ECM). Access the "Service" tab and use the "Service Procedure" "Engine Control System Tuning".
Monitor the following parameters
"Actual Aftertreatment # 1 Intake Oxygen sensor"
"Desired Aftertreatment # 1 Intake Oxygen sensor"
"Actual Aftertreatment # 1 Outlet Oxygen sensor"
"Desired Aftertreatment # 1 Outlet Oxygen sensor"
Determine whether the system is in a rich state or a lean state by monitoring the voltage for both of the actual sensors. A higher voltage corresponds to a rich state and a lower voltage corresponds to a lean state.
Determine whether the actual outlet sensor voltage matches the desired outlet sensor voltage. Allow the voltage to stabilize.
Monitor the emissions analyzer. Verify that the exhaust emissions after the catalyst are within the limit. Refer to the engine Technical Marketing Information (TMI), "Emissions Data".
If the exhaust emissions are not within the acceptable limit, adjust the "Aftertreatment #1 Outlet Oxygen Sensor Voltage Offset".
If the level of CO is high, decrease the offset.
If the level of NOx is high, increase the offset.Adjust the offset in small increments. Allow approximately five minutes for the emissions to stabilize after an adjustment.Note: The "Aftertreatment #1 Outlet Oxygen Sensor Voltage Offset" can also be adjusted by using the Messinger control panel. The parameter is located under "Configuration", "Air Fuel Ratio Control", "AT1 Outlet O2 Voltage Offset". To change the parameter, select "OK", enter the value, and select "OK" again to save.
Continue to make adjustments until the emissions are well within the required limit. If you are unable to achieve acceptable emissions, proceed to "Adjusting the Fuel Actuator"Adjusting the Fuel Actuator
In the "Configuration" screen of Cat ET, set the "Emissions Feedback Mode Configuration" to "Feedback Disabled". When the feedback is disabled, the engine runs in the open loop mode.
Use Cat ET to adjust the "Emissions Feedback Disable Fuel Actuator Position Command". Adjust the percentage of the fuel valve position. Gradually change the percentage and monitor the emissions analyzer. Adjusting the position of the actuator affects the exhaust emissions by allowing more fuel or less fuel for combustion. After each adjustment, allow a few minutes for the emissions to stabilize.
When the emissions are within the required limit, record the value for the percentage of the actuator position.
Use Cat ET to set the "Emissions Feedback Mode Configuration" to "Feedback Enabled". Wait for the emissions to stabilize. Note: Increasing the "Aftertreatment #1 Outlet Oxygen Sensor Voltage Offset" causes the actuator to open the fuel valve more. Decreasing the value causes the actuator to move the valve toward the closed position.
Observe the value for the "Emissions Feedback Disable Fuel Actuator Position Command". If the value is different than the value that was recorded for Step 3, adjust the "Aftertreatment #1 Outlet Oxygen Sensor Voltage Offset" again. Make small adjustments that are less than 0.05 V. After each adjustment, check the value for the "Emissions Feedback Disable Fuel Actuator Position Command".
Continue to make adjustments until the value for the fuel actuator matches the value that was recorded for Step 3.
Verify that the emissions are in compliance.
