Component Electrical Checkout
Engine Intake Valve Actuation System Oil Pressure Control Valve Start the engine. Use the "Intake Valve Actuation System Test" in diagnostic tests in Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to activate the "Engine Intake Valve Actuation System Oil Pressure Control Valve". Once the test is complete, review the active diagnostic codes to determine the code that is present.
Engine Retarder Solenoid Engine Retarder Solenoid Override: Initiate an "Engine Retarder Solenoid Override" through Cat ET to activate the engine retarder solenoid. Review active diagnostic codes to determine what code is present.
Engine Starter Motor Relay Attempt to start the engine. Once the ECM attempts to energize the relay, the code will become active. Refer to the machine-specific schematic for the "Engine Starter Motor Relay" wiring circuit.
Ether Solenoid Use the "Ether Injection Override" in the override parameters section in Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to activate the ether starting aid solenoid. Review active diagnostic codes to determine what code is present.
Solenoid Valve for EGR Valve Actuator EGR System Test: Initiate the "EGR System Test" through Cat ET to activate the control solenoid for the NRS valve. If the fault becomes active, the test will abort. Review active diagnostic codes to determine what code is present.

Required Service Tools
Part Number Description
372-5260 Test Lead Tool Group Recommended Actions
Note: The Data Link Type relay will disable the output to the heating element. To clear the -6 codes in this list, the machine battery disconnect switch must be turned off and on. Using the key cycle will not clear the code. If the battery disconnect switch is not available, disconnect the relay power connector or remove power at the fuse/breaker. The most likely cause of this code is a short circuit in the wiring between the smart relay and the heating element. There may be a problem with a connector.
Table 4
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector.
Codes
Result: There is an active or logged -5 code.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: There is an active or logged -6 code.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
2. Check the Wiring for an Open Circuit
A. Verify that the harness connector is free of debris, free of corrosion, and securely connected.
B. Disconnect the component from the harness.
C. Connect a jumper wire between the terminals of the harness connector for the affected component. The component coil is replaced with a short circuit.
D. Establish communication between Cat ET and the engine ECM. Select the appropriate "Electrical Checkout" from Table 2 above to activate the desired component.
Open Circuit
Result: A -5 code became active during the electrical checkout. The ECM did not detect the jumper wire. There is an open circuit in the wiring between the coil and the ECM connector. There may be a problem with a connector.
Repair: Repair or replace the connectors or the wiring.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
