Information:

Connecting ECAP and Communication Adapter Tool To 3508 EUI System:
The Electronic Control Analyzer and Programmer (ECAP) and Communication Adapter Tool use 24 VDC power from the machine battery. This permits operation either on the ground or in the cab during a machine test.Use the following procedure to connect the ECAP and Communication Adapter Tool to the engine:1. Turn key OFF.2. Connect the 7X1570 cable between the Engine Service Connector (9-pin, gray plastic, Deutsch) and the Communication Adapter CONTROL connector.3. Connect the 7X1420 or 7X1851 cable between the ECAP Port 1 and the Communication Adapter SERVICE connector.4. Turn key ON to begin testing. The ECAP and Communication Adapter Tool will operate with the engine running, or on the machine battery power only. If the ECAP and Communication Adapter Tool do not communicate with the 3508 EUI System, refer to, P-523 CAT Data Link Communications.System Configuration Parameters
System Configuration Parameters are those that affect emissions or horsepower of the engine. They also include parameters that define the configuration of the machine. They are programmed at the factory or dealership and should not require changing through the life of the engine. Correct values for some of these parameters are stamped on the Engine Information Plate. In the event that one of these parameters is changed, the change may be permanently recorded in the ECM. This "audit trail" is maintained in order to identify unauthorized changes. Changing system configuration parameters may void Caterpillar warranty.Full Load Setting:
Number representing fuel system adjustments made at the factory to "fine tune" the fuel system. Correct value for this parameter is stamped on the Engine Information Plate for each engine.Personality Module Code:
Code which prevent use of wrong Personality Module for this engine. Each 3508 EUI application (777C, D11N, etc) has a different code associated with it. This code (stored in ECM) MUST match that in the Personality Module or a CID-FMI 253-02 System Parameters will be generated and the engine will not start. When rerating the engine or installing a new ECM, reprogramming the interlock code will prompt the ECM to read and match its stored code to the Personality Module. Note that this code DOES NOT need to be programmed when a new Personality Module is replaced, as long as the new Personality Module is the same part number. The Engine will not run if the Interlock is not programmed. For instructions on how to reprogram the interlock code, refer to Special Instruction SEHS9343. Installing the incorrect personality module may void Caterpillar warranty.Engine Serial Number:
Should be programmed to match the engine serial number stamped on the Engine Information Plate. A new ECM is delivered with the engine serial number not programmed.FRC Offset Value:
The ECM determines a value based on atmospheric pressure that is used to adjust the fuel ratio control. This controls smoke during acceleration of the 3508 EUI engine. An offset value of -25 to +25 may be used to adjust for customer preference, fuel quality, or other factors that would effect engine performance.ECAP Screen: "Read /Change Parameters" Monitoring Package:
The ECM defaults with CMS as the monitoring package it interfaces with on production machines. This monitoring system can be changed to EMS to allow the ECM to interface with the EMS monitoring package on retrofit machines.Engine Fan Control:
The ECM defaults with the Engine Fan Control system ON for production machines and retrofit machines with the fan control system. This feature can be turned off for retrofit applications that do not have the fan control system.Factory Passwords
Factory passwords are required: To clear logged engine events. Factory passwords are controlled by Caterpillar Inc., and may only be obtained by authorized Caterpillar Dealers.Whenever you try to use the ECAP to clear one of these events, you will be prompted for the factory passwords. The password entry screen will also display: ECM S/N, Engine S/N, ECAP S/N, Reason Code and Total Tattletales. You will need to present this information to an authorized Caterpillar dealer to acquire these passwords. Once you have been given the password you will be able to clear any logged event. The passwords are only good for one clearing session. A different set of passwords will be needed if you exit the ECAP Display/Clear Events screen before clearing ALL events.3508 EUI: ECAP "Factory Password" Screen 3508 EUI: ECAP "Display Events" Screen Programming New Electronic Control Modules
The Electronic Control Module or ECM is the heart of the Electronic Control System used on the 3508 EUI Engine. You should be aware that the ECM has no moving parts, has a very high reliability rating and can be time consuming to replace. Most failures occur in wiring and connectors, sensors or fuel injectors. Be sure to follow the troubleshooting procedures outlined in this guide. Be certain that you will be fixing the customers problem before replacing the ECM.The parameters stored in the ECM to be replaced, must be read on an ECAP and recorded. The Personality Module must be removed from the old ECM and installed in the new ECM. After the new ECM is installed on the engine, the parameters recorded from the old ECM must be programmed into the new ECM and the Injection Timing must be recalibrated. The following procedure is a summary of the basic steps necessary to program a replacement ECM.1: Use a copy of the "3508 EUI Read/Change Parameters Worksheet", to record the Parameters from the ECM being replaced.A. Use the ECAP to access "Parameters" from the ECM being replaced.B. Record the "Parameters" listed on the worksheet.2: Replace the faulty ECM.3: Install the Personality Module into the ECM making sure it seats properly into the Personality Module Socket (white EPROM carrier socket). DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE FORCE TO PUSH IT INTO THE SOCKET. The socket is keyed to accept the Personality Module (see embossed "WHITE" on bottom) in one position only. A "Click" can be felt when the Personality Module is pushed in correctly. Install the Personality Module access cover back onto the ECM. Make sure the O-ring seal is seated properly.
