OIL TRANSFER FROM TRANSMISSION TO ENGINE, INSPECTION FOR STARTER INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLYWHEEL HOUSING, AND EXHAUST GASES LEAKING BY MANIFOLD, 926 Loaders, 1151, 1300, 3001, 1059, PI7140 U-27 C-22 See March 20, 1985 See April 30, 1986 optional SPECIAL ALL INVENTORY UNITS SHOULD BE REWORKED PRIOR TO DELIVERY. Rework owners' loaders at their convenience. Problems Oil Transfer Transmission oil can transfer past the crankshaft rear seal into the engine crankcase on some 926 Loaders at early hours. This will usually cause two problems if not stopped. Excessive oil in the engine results in high oil consumption, and possible loss of power and excessive fuel consumption. And, low level in the transmission can cause low control pressure, resulting in clutch slipping or clutch disengagement. A double lip crankshaft seal is now used in place of the single lip seal to correct this problem. The casting ridge under the oil return port in the flywheel housing has also been eliminated to increase the oil flow from the flywheel housing to the transmission. Illustration 1. Starter to Flywheel Housing Interference Some machines have experienced interference between the starter pinion drive housing and a boss on the inside of the flywheel housing. The boss height has been shortened to prevent interference. Exhaust Gas Leakage There is a possibility of exhaust gases leaking between the exhaust manifold and cylinder head on the listed 926 Loaders. This is usually caused by the bolts loosening on the hardened washers. Sheet metal locks are now used in place of the washers. Affected Loaders And Parts To Stop Oil Transfer 926 Loaders: 94Z1-94Z917, 923, 924, 928, 931-933, 935-938 Parts Needed: 1-7W3202 Seal Group-Rear 1-9S3265 Retaining Compound 1-6V1541 Quick Cure Primer Affected Loaders And Parts To Stop Exhaust Gas Leakage 926 Loaders: 94Z1-94Z917, 923, 924, 928, 931-933, 935-938 Parts Needed: 2-6N6962 Lock 2-9L9658 Lock Action Requested Correct these three problems at the same time (if convenient) on all the listed loaders. Any former 1W36 Seal Groups in your parts stocks should be used in other applications. Exhaust Gas Leakage Replace all the washers under the exhaust manifold bolts with the locks. Each lock accommodates two bolts as shown in the Illustration. (SEE ILLUSTRATION) Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the bolt threads. Tighten to 30 +/- 5 N.m. (22 +/- 4 ft lb). Bend the lock tabs. Oil Transfer When you install the new parts to correct the oil transfer problem, use the following Inspection and Procedure. The following tools are needed to install the new seal group: 1-8T3098 * Installer 2-1P5515 Bolt 1-5P290 Locator 1-9S8858 Nut * If not readily available, modify a 5P7293 Installer and use it. See covering topic. 1. Remove engine and flywheel. 2. The oil scavange return port is in the side of the flywheel housing. Illustration 1. Look for a cast ridge under this hole. Illustrations 1 and 2. Remove ridge if present. This will allow any oil thrown by the flywheel to flow without restriction into the return port and back to the transmission. : Protect the seal area from grinding dust, and clean the housing thoroughly after grinding. USTRATION 1 (SEE ILLUSTRATION) ILLUSTRATION 2 (SEE ILLUSTRATION) 3. Also, be sure to look inside the flywheel housing for possible interference between the end of the starter pinion drive housing and a boss on the inside rear face of the flywheel housing. Illustration 2a. If necessary, grind off only enough metal to eliminate interference. : If you remove too much metal, oil can leak through the tapped hole on the outside of housing. ILLUSTRATION 2A (SEE ILLUSTRATION) If the starter or the flywheel housing is damaged (cracked), replace the damaged part. File warranty claim through normal channels. 4. Remove the former rear seal and wear sleeve. Use the Service Manual for 910 Loaders as a reference. 5. Clean and then prepare the ID of the wear sleeve and the OD of the crankshaft with the quick cure primer. Next, put the retaining compound on both these surfaces. : Do not separate the seal from the wear sleeve. Install both parts as a unit. 6. Install the locator and bolts on the rear of the crankshaft. See Illustration 3. 7. Position the wear sleeve and seal on the locator with the seal part number away from the crankshaft. 8. Put the installer on the locator. 9. Put clean engine oil on the face of the nut and install it on the locator. Tighten the nut until the installer bottoms out on the locator. 10. Remove tools and see that the new wear sleeve and new seal are positioned correctly. The rear edge of the wear sleeve must be even with the rear face of the flywheel mounting flange on the crankshaft. 11. Stamp letters "DL" on the lower left corner of the engine serial number plate. Illustration 4. ILLUSTRATION 3 (SEE ILLUSTRATION) ILLUSTRATION 4 (SEE ILLUSTRATION) Modifying 5P7293 Installer If Needed 1. Remove the 8H708 Bolts and the plate from the sleeve. 2. Machine material from surface "A" of the sleeve to the dimensions shown in Illustration 5. ILLUSTRATION 5 (SEE ILLUSTRATION) 3. Reinstall plate and the 8H708 Bolts. 4. Remove the part
