Information:

Introduction
Note: Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you read this information and you understand this information. This Special Instruction describes the methods that are used in order to provide the long-term storage and the removal from storage of diesel engines. Use the following procedures on engines that will be stored for over 1 year to a maximum of 2 years in a protected environment with the intent of later installation in Caterpillar and OEM machines.Note: For the storage procedure used when storing engines for less than 1 year refer to Special Instruction, SEHS9031.Safety Information
Work carefully around an engine that is running. Engine parts that are hot, or parts that are moving, can cause personal injury.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your health. Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.
Wear protective gloves in order to avoid skin irritation.
Personal injury can result from improper handling of chemicals.Make sure you use all the necessary protective equipment required to do the job.Make sure that you read and understand all directions and hazards described on the labels and material safety data sheet of any chemical that is used.Observe all safety precautions recommended by the chemical manufacturer for handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals.

Preliminary Information
Caterpillar recommends the use of a volatile corrosion inhibitor oil, in order to prevent internal engine damage that is due exposure to moisture during storage. The inhibitor causes the moisture inside the engine to evaporate. This allows the inhibitor to condense on the inside surface of the engine. This process of evaporation and condensation offers full protection to surfaces that cannot be reached with preservatives that require the direct application of the inhibitor. This process also makes cleaning of the engine easier when the engine is being removed from storage. The volatile vapors are removed by simply running the engine to operating temperature. After the vapors are removed, a mineral oil base will remain.Storage
The storage facility must be fully enclosed in order to protect the engine from rain, snow, and wind. The storage facility must be heated in the winter to a temperature above 0° C (32° F).
After shipment of the engine to the storage facility, inspect the Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI) bag that covers the engine. The VCI bag protects the engine from damage during shipping. If the damage is minor, repair the bag. If the damage cannot be easily repaired, replace the bag. Refer to Step 3.
Cover the engine with one new VCI bag. Attach the bag to the wooden skid so that the bottom of the bag is open.
Do not perform any product updates to the engine during storage unless approval is given by the Mossville Engine Center. In order to ensure the integrity of the preservation package, do not remove the covers on the engine during storage.Removal from Storage
Remove the engines will be in the order that they were received.
Remove all outside covers that were installed during preservation.
Clean the engine thoroughly.
Perform any Caterpillar required product updates at this time.
Drain any fluids from the oil pan. Fill the pan with new oil. Replace the oil filters.
Inspect all belts and hoses. If necessary, replace the belts and hoses. Ensure that the belt tension is correct. Be sure that the hose clamps are secure.
Replace the fuel filters.
Use a pressure lubrication system to ensure adequate lubrication to in
