Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
CDL Code and Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
247-9
SAE J1939 Data Link:Abnormal Update Rate The SCR system ECM has lost communication with the engine ECM on the global CAN data link. The code is logged.
2348-9
SAE J1939 Data Link #2:Abnormal Update Rate The SCR system ECM has lost all communication on the local CAN data link The code is logged.
3002-6
Engine Exhaust NOx Level Sensor:Current Above Normal The ECM detects a short in the power supply circuit for the sensor.
Troubleshoot this code before the 3216-9 The code is logged.
3002-9
Engine Exhaust NOx Level Sensor:Abnormal Update Rate The SCR system ECM has lost communication with the sensor on the local CAN data link The code is logged.
3609-6
Aftertreatment #1 Outlet #1 NOx Level Sensor:Current Above Normal The ECM detects a short in the power supply circuit for the sensor.
Troubleshoot this code before the 3216-9 The code is logged.
3609-9
Aftertreatment #1 Outlet #1 NOx Level Sensor:Abnormal Update Rate The SCR system ECM has lost communication with the sensor on the local CAN data link The code is logged.
3610-6
Aftertreatment #1 Outlet #2 NOx Level Sensor:Current Above Normal The ECM detects a short in the power supply circuit for the sensor.
Troubleshoot this code before the 3216-9 The code is logged.
3610-9
Aftertreatment #1 Outlet #2 NOx Level Sensor:Abnormal Update Rate The SCR system ECM has lost communication with the sensor on the local CAN data link The code is logged. This procedure verifies the integrity of the global CAN data link between the SCR system ECM and the engine ECM.This procedure verifies the integrity of the local CAN data link between the SCR system ECM and the following components:
Intake #1 NOx Sensor
Outlet #1 NOx Sensor
Outlet #2 NOx SensorIf Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) will not communicate with the ECM, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tool Does Not Communicate" before you begin this procedure. The procedure verifies that electrical power is being supplied to the engine ECM and to the service tool connector. The data links provide a communication link between the various control modules on the application.Cat ET may display the following error message:"The version of the ECM is not recognized and the integrity of the changed parameters and displayed data is not guaranteed."If this message is displayed, the flash file in the ECM may be newer than the version of Cat ET, or the latest version of Cat ET has not been installed. You must correct this condition prior to continuing with this procedure.Test Step 1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
Turn the main disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Thoroughly inspect the ECM connector J1/P1 and J2/P2. Inspect all of the connectors to other modules on the data links. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.

Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points. Expected Result:All of the connectors, pins, and sockets are coupled and/or inserted. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The harness and connectors appear to be OK. If bypassing the wiring is applicable, proceed to Test Step 2. If bypassing the wiring is not applicable, proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - The connectors and/or wiring are not OK.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Bypass the Wiring for the Data Link (if applicable)
Connect the 328-2292 Harness (ENGINE ECM BYPASS) to the J1 connector, to the 217-0113 Main Harness, and to the battery.
Try to establish communication between Cat ET and the ECM. Expected Result:Cat ET and the ECM communicate. Results:
OK - Cat ET and the ECM communicate.Repair: Cat ET and the ECM communicate when the bypass harness is installed. However, communication cannot be established via the engine wiring. Disconnect the electrical connector from each of the control modules that is on the specific data link one at a time to isolate the problem. Try to establish communication between Cat ET and the ECM after disconnecting each module. The problem is in the control module if disconnecting the module allows Cat ET and the ECM to communicate. If a module is suspect, replace the module. Verify that the problem is resolved. The control module is OK if the problem remains when the module is disconnected. Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - Cat ET and the ECM do not communicate.Repair: Communication between Cat ET and the ECM is not established when the bypass harness is installed. Temporarily connect a test ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Test ECM Mode". Verify that the problem is resolved.Connect the original ECM and verify that the problem returns. If the problem is resolved, replace the original ECM.If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. Check the Wiring for the Data Links for a Short Circuit
Turn the power disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Disconnect the P1 and P2 ECM connectors.
Measure the resista
