Removal for the left side cylinder head is shown. For removal of right side cylinder head, disconnect the fuel and oil filter bracket assembly from the engine and pull clear. Remove aftercooler tube assembly (1) from the top of the engine.1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.2. Remove bolts (4) and (5). Remove plates (2) and (3) from the engine as a unit. Remove the O-ring seal from the back of plate (3). 3. Disconnect clips that hold hose assembly (6) in position. Pull hose assembly (6) clear of the cylinder head.4. Remove bracket assembly (8) from the aftercooler cover.5. Remove pipe (7). 6. Remove pipe (9) from the turbocharger.7. Remove tube assembly (10) from the cylinder head and air compressor.8. Disconnect wire (11) from the water temperature switch. 9. Remove bracket (13) from the fuel injection pump housing and cylinder head.10. Remove supports (12) from each end of the cylinder head.11. Disconnect wires (15) from the glow plugs. 12. Remove lead assemblies (14) from the cylinder head. 13. Remove cylinder head bolts (16) and (17). Fasten tooling (A) to the cylinder head with four 3/8"-16 NC bolts 2 in. long as shown.14. Fasten a hoist to the cylinder head. Remove the remainder of the cylinder head bolts. Remove cylinder head (18). The weight of the cylinder head is 300 lb. (135 kg).15. Remove the cylinder head gasket.Install Cylinder Heads
Make sure a new gasket has been installed between the spacer plate and cylinder block. See REMOVE AND INSTALL SPACER PLATES.1. Thoroughly clean the spacer plate and the bottom surface of the cylinder head. Install a new cylinder head gasket. 2. Fasten tooling (A) to the cylinder head with four 3/8"-16 NC bolts 2 in. long as shown. Fasten a hoist to the cylinder head. Put cylinder head (1) in position on the engine.
Do not cause damage to the water seals or the cylinder head gasket.
3. Put clean SAE 30 oil on all bolt threads and tighten the bolts in the following sequence. a) Tighten bolts 1 through 20 in number sequence to a torque of 200 20 lb.ft. (270 25 N m).b) Tighten bolts 1 through 20 in number sequence to a torque of 330 15 lb.ft. (447 20 N m).c) Tighten bolts 1 through 20 in number sequence again to a torque of 330 15 lb.ft. (447 20 N m). 4. Install push rods (3) and rocker shaft assemblies (2) on the cylinder head. Put clean SAE 30 oil on all bolt threads and tighten the bolts in the following sequence: a) Tighten bolts 21 through 26 in number sequence to a torque of 200 20 lb.ft. (270 25 N m).b) Tighten bolts 21 through 26 in number sequence to a torque of 330 15 lb.ft. (447 20 N m).c) Tighten bolts 21 through 26 in number sequence again to a torque of 330 15 lb.ft. (447 20 N m)5. Install the 3/8"-16 NC bolts in the cylinder head and tighten to a torque of 32 5 lb.ft. (43 7 N m). 6. Install bracket (4) on the fuel injection pump housing and cylinder head.7. Install supports (5) on each end of the cylinder head.8. Connect the wire to the water temperature switch. 9. Install tube assembly (7) on the air compressor and cylinder head.10. Check the O-ring seals on the pipe for wear or damage. If necessary, make a replacement. Put a small amount of clean SAE 30 oil on the O-ring seals.11. Install pipe (6) in the turbocharger. 12. Install a new gasket on the aftercooler cover. Put pipe (8) in position on the aftercooler cover and pipe. 13. Put bracket assembly (9) in position. Install the bolts that hold the bracket assembly and pipe to the aftercooler cover.14. Put the governor control cylinder group air line in position and connect the clip that holds it to the pipe. 15. Install O-ring seal (10) on the front of the cylinder head.16. Put plates (11) and (12) in position on the engine as a unit. Install the bolts that hold them.17. Install the glow plug lead assemblies on the cylinder head. Connect the glow plug wires to the glow plugs.18. Check bridge adjustment. See BRIDGE ADJUSTMENT in TESTING AND ADJUSTING.19. Make an adjustment of the vales to have a clearance of .015 in. (0.38 mm) for intake and .030 in. (0.76 mm) for exhaust.
