Information:

Electronic Technician (ET)
For details on how to read and change parameters using ET, Communication Adapter Tool and the appropriate software, refer to the instructions included with the JERD2129 or JERD2142 ET Data Subscription and the JERD2124 ET Software.Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP)
For details on how to read and change parameters using ECAP, Communication Adapter Tool and the appropriate Service Program Module, refer to Special Instruction SEHS9343, Using The NEXG4521 Functions Service Program Module and Tool Operating Manual SEHS9264.Factory Passwords
Factory Level Passwords are required to clear certain logged events or to change certain parameters (such as Full Load Setting) to restrict changes by authorized personnel. When the correct passwords have been entered, the changes will be programmed in the ECM. Logged engine events that require a Factory Password to clear include Engine Overspeed, High Engine Coolant Temperature, Air Inlet Restriction, and Low Engine Oil Pressure. The Electronic Service Tool Factory Passwords Screen will display ECM Serial Number, Engine Serial Number, Electronic Service Tool Serial Number, a Reason Code, and Total Tattletales (refer to Figure 2.1). This information must be given to an authorized Caterpillar dealer to obtain the proper passwords. The passwords are controlled by Caterpillar Inc. and may only be obtained by an authorized Caterpillar dealer. Examples of the Electronic Service Tool Screens are shown in this section. The passwords are only good for one programming or clearing session. A different set of passwords will be required after exiting the Electronic Service Tool Screen before clearing ALL events or programming all parameters.System Configuration Parameters
System Configuration Parameters are parameters that affect emissions, power of the engine, and other engine features. They are usually programmed at the factory and in most cases never need to be changed. System Configuration Parameters must be reprogrammed if an ECM is replaced, but not if the Personality Module is replaced (unless the engine rating changes). Proper values for these parameters are available on an Electronic Service Tool (refer to Figure 2.2). Certain Configuration Parameters are also stamped on the Engine Information Plate. Changing parameters that are protected with factory passwords may void Caterpillar warranty.Engine Serial Number
The Engine Serial Number should be programmed to match the engine serial number stamped on the Engine Information Plate. The serial number is not programmed on a new (replacement) ECM.Equipment ID Number
The Equipment ID Number should be programmed to match the serial number stamped on the machine frame. The Equipment ID is not programmed on a new (replacement) ECM.Full Load Setting
The Full Load Setting parameter represents adjustments performed at the factory to fine tune the fuel system. The value for this parameter is stamped on the Engine Information Plate. Factory Passwords are required to change the Full Load Setting.FRC Offset Value
The ECM adjusts the fuel ratio control to turbocharger boost pressure and atmospheric pressure to minimize exhaust smoke during acceleration. In addition, an offset value of -25 to +25 may be programmed to adjust for customer preference, fuel quantity, or other factors that would affect engine performance.Set Injector Codes
This function is used to read/enter the numeric 4-digit code stamped on each injector. The Electronic Service Tool will display a list of the codes currently in use. When installing or replacing injectors, ensure that the correct value for each injector is entered. When replacing an ECM record the injector codes or use ET Copy Configuration so that they may be entered into the new ECM.Personality Module Code
The personality module interlock code prevents the use of an incorrect Personality Module for the engine. Each engine application (large trucks, wheel loaders, etc) has a different personality module interlock code associated with it. This code is stored in the ECM and must match the installed personality module part number or a CID-FMI 253-02 Personality Module Mismatch diagnostic code will be generated and the engine will not start. When rerating an engine or installing a new ECM, reprogramming the interlock code allows the ECM to change it's personality module interlock code to match the personality module part number that is installed. The interlock code should NOT be reprogrammed when replacing a personality module with the same part number.Status Information
Engine control parameters can be viewed with an Electronic Service Tool. Each parameter is displayed as a label followed by the current parameter value (refer to Figure 2.3). Status information is continuously updated and is arranged in a Group format for ET or Screen format for ECAP. For convenience, there are several predefined groups and screens that contain the most commonly accessed parameters. These groups or screens can be customized to display combinations of parameters as required. Refer to the ECAP Tool Operating Manual SEHS9343 or the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) Getting Started Manual for further information about programming status screens or groups.

The Electronic Control Module (ECM) contains no moving parts, has a very high reliability rating, and replacement can be time consuming. Most failures occur in the wiring, connectors, or sensors. Follow the troubleshooting procedures outlined in this guide to be sure that replacing the ECM will correct the problem. DO NOT replace an ECM on speculation! To ensure the suspect ECM is the cause of the problem, first temporarily connect a new or test (known good) ECM. Transfer the Personality Module
