Engine Walk-Around Inspection
For maximum service life of your marine engine, make a walk-around inspection of the installation. Thoroughly inspect the engine compartment installation before starting the engine. Look for such items as fuel, oil or coolant leaks, loose bolts, worn belts and trash build-up.Keep the engine area clean. Remove trash build-up and have repairs made as needed. It only takes a few minutes to make minor corrections. This can prevent major repairs at a later date.Perform all periodic (Daily) maintenance before starting the engine. Refer to the Maintenance Schedule and Daily maintenance recommendations in this manual for details.
Any time oil (or other fluid) is spilled on or near the engine it should be cleaned up. Accumulated grease and oil on an engine or platform is a fire hazard. Remove this debris with steam cleaning or high pressure water each time any oil (or other fluid) is spilled on or near an engine and working area.Wipe clean all fittings, caps and plugs before servicing.
If the engine is equipped with the following features, perform the RESET function in preparation for starting the engine.* Low Oil Pressure Shutoff ... RESET* Overspeed Shutoff ... RESET* Air Safety Shutoff ... RESETStarting Information
Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your health. Start and operate the engine in a well-ventilated area and ensure exhaust is vented outside and piping is connected properly.
For initial start-up of a new or rebuilt engine, make provision to shut down the engine should a runaway (overspeed) occur. This may be accomplished by cutting off the air and/or fuel supply to the engine. All valves in fuel return line must be open before and during engine operation to prevent high fuel pressure. High fuel pressure may cause filter housing failure or other damage.
Do not start the engine or move any of the controls if there is a DO NOT OPERATE or similar warning tag attached to the start switch or controls. The pilot must be satisfied that no one will be endangered before and when starting the engine. If the engine has not been run for several weeks, fuel may have drained and allowed air into the filter housing. Also, when fuel filters have been changed, some air space will be left in the housing. In these instances, prime the fuel system.Refer to Priming the Fuel System in this publication for more information.Unaided starting can be accomplished down to a temperature of 0°C (32°F). If a potential for lower starting temperature exists, consult your Caterpillar dealer.Heating of jacket water and crankcase oil is required to assist starting in temperatures below 0°C (32°F). An additional or extra battery capacity (for electric starting) may be required to start the engine at colder temperatures. Refer to oil, fuel and air intake recommendations in this manual for additional information.Electric Starting
Do not engage starting motor when flywheel is turning. If oil pressure does not raise within 15 seconds after the engine starts, stop the engine and make necessary corrections.Do not start engine under load (be sure marine transmission is in neutral and not in gear). If engine fails to start within 20 seconds, release the START switch or button and wait two minutes to allow the starting motor to cool before using it again.
There are two electric starting motors that can be used with these engines. The starting motors will require 12 or 24 Volt DC starting voltage. One starting motor is specified for 20°C (68°F) and above ambient temperature and the other is for -12 to 20°C (10 to 68°F).Engine Starting Procedure
Pre-start Requirements
* Perform all Daily maintenance recommendations such as checking fluid levels for the engine and marine gear lube systems, and cooling system.* Observe the air cleaner service indicator (if equipped). Service the air cleaner when the yellow diaphragm enters the red zone or the red piston locks in the visible position.* Make sure air inlet shutoff knob is in the RUN position and inlet piping and filters are in place.* Check the fuel supply. Drain water from the water separator (if equipped). Open the fuel supply valve. If the engine has not run for some time, fuel may have drained and allowed air into the filter housing. When fuel filters have been changed, some air space will be left in the housing. In these instances, prime the fuel system.* Disconnect the battery charger, if it is attached.* Open the raw water valve on the engine jacket heat exchanger system (if equipped). Prime the raw water pump if the raw water system has been drained.
Marine Transmission Control: Forward (1), Neutral (2), Reverse (3).* Place the marine gear control lever in NEUTRAL or, on a generator set, open the circuit breaker.* Move the throttle to approximately half engine speed (LOW IDLE position) to get the fuel rack to move to fuel ON position.Air Starting
* Open the bleed valve on the bottom of the air tank to drain condensation and oil carryover. Close bleed valve. Check the air supply pressure. The air starting motor must have 100 psi (690 kPa) to operate properly. Keep the oiler jar at least half full of oil. Add oil if necessary.* Place the marine gear in NEUTRAL. Move the throttle to LOW IDLE engine speed.* Move toggle switch to the ON position and push the air control valve in, to crank the engine. As soon as the engine starts, release the valve, or ...* ... Push in the oil pressure lockout knob and hold. Push the air valve control knob in to crank the engine. Release the air valve control knob and oil pressure lockout knob as soon as the engine starts.Electric Starting Above +10°C (+50°F)
Start the engine using the following procedure and/or refer to the marine vessel OEM manual for your type of start controls.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking again.Extended cranking at low oil pressure can activate the mechanical safety alarm. If the reset button is in the OFF position, push
