Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the Starting Aids
A. If cold ambient conditions exist, check operation of starting aids. Verify that the starting aid is operating correctly. Refer to the appropriate circuit test for information that is related to troubleshooting the starting aid.
Note: If ether bottles are not installed, use Cat ET in to verify that ether is not enabled.
Starting Aid
Result: The starting aid is operating correctly.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The starting aid is not operating correctly.

Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The driven equipment is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace damaged driven equipment.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Inspect the Fuel System
Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel System Inspection" for additional information.
A. Visually check the fuel level in the fuel tank. Do not rely on the fuel gauge only.
B. Ensure that the vent in the fuel cap is not filled with debris.
C. Ensure that the fuel supply valve (if equipped) is in the full OPEN position.
Note: Cold weather adversely affects the characteristics of the fuel. Refer to the engines Operation and Maintenance Manual for information on improving the characteristics of the fuel during cold-weather operation.
D. Check fuel quality. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Quality - Test" for additional information. Check the fuel tank for debris or foreign objects which may block the fuel supply.
E. Check for fuel leaks.
F. Check the filtered fuel pressure while the engine is being cranked. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Fuel Pressure Is Low" for additional information.
Fuel System
Result: The fuel system is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The fuel system is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace damaged fuel system components.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Inspect the Batteries
A. Charge the batteries, if necessary. Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS7633, "Battery Test Procedure" for additional information.
B. Load-test the batteries. Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS9249, "Use of 4C-4911 Battery Load Tester for 6 V, 8 V, and 12 V Lead Acid Batteries" for additional information.
Batteries
Result: The batteries are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: The batteries are NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace the batteries.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Inspect the Charging Circuit
A. Inspect the battery cables, wiring, and connections in the charging circuit.
B. Verify that a switched battery circuit drained the battery by being left in the ON position.
Charging Circuit
Result: The charging circuit is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
Result: The charging circuit is NOT OK.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 8.
8. Check for Starter Engagement
A. Connect Cat ET.
B. Use Cat ET to monitor status of the relay for the starting motor while attempting to start the engine.
Starter Engagement
Result: The relay for the starting motor indicates that the engine should crank and cranking occurs.
Proceed to Test Step 9.
Result: The relay for the starting motor indicates that the engine should crank but no cranking occurs.
Repair: Troubleshoot the starting circuit.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 9.
9. Check for Incorrect Configuration Parameters
Note: A maximum of one crank cycle per overcrank is recommended.
A. Connect Cat ET.
B. Use Cat ET to verify that the correct parameters are being used.
- "Cycle Crank Time"
- "Overcrank Time"
Note: If the engine does not have secondary starters, make sure that the "Starting System #2 Relay Status" parameter is "Disabled or Not Installed".
C. Make sure that the engine can be cranked for a sufficient amount of time.
Crank Cycle
Result: The engine cannot be cranked for a sufficient amount of time.
Repair: Input the correct parameters. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Configuration Parameters" for additional information.
