Information:

Fluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Effective July 1, 1992 regulations prohibit the venting of any refrigerant into the atmosphere. Refer to Caterpillar publication SENR3334-01, SENR5664 and NEDG5065 for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to reclaim refrigerant from any Caterpillar machine.
Always wear goggles when working on air conditioning systems. The system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Escaping refrigerant R-12 (C C12 F2 Dichloro Difluoro Methane) or refrigerant R-134A can cause freezing of human flesh.Do not smoke while working on air conditioning systems. INHALING REFRIGERANT R-12 OR REFRIGERANT R-134A THROUGH ANY SMOKING MATERIAL, ALTHOUGH NOT TOXIC OR FLAMMABLE, CAN GENERATE LETHAL PHOSGENE GAS AND CAUSE VIOLENT ILLNESS OR DEATH. ALSO, HEAT MUST NEVER BE APPLIED TO A CHARGED SYSTEM. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual, Form No. SENR3334-01 and SENR5664, for more information on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant from the system.
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap slowly to release the relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
1. Drain the radiator in a suitable container for disposal or reuse.2. Recover the refrigerant from the air conditioning system. Refer to Service Manual, SENR5664, "Air Conditioning And Heating Systems With R-134a Refrigerant" and Special Publication, NEDG5065, "Air Conditioning Tools" for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to charge the air conditioning system in any Caterpillar machine. 3. Support radiator guard assembly hood (1) with Tooling (A) and a suitable hoist and chains. Remove eight bolts (2) and radiator guard assembly hood (1). The weight of radiator guard assembly hood is 32 kg (70 lb). 4. Disconnect hydraulic oil cooler hose assemblies (3) and (7). Disconnect two upper radiator tube assemblies (4) and (6) and turbocharger coolant tube assembly (5) from the upper radiator tank. 5. Disconnect the opposite end of the upper radiator tube assemblies (4) and (6) and turbocharger coolant tube assembly (5). Remove tube assemblies (4), (6) and (5). 6. Remove three bolts (8) and the washers and cover (9) to gain access to air conditioning condenser hose connections. 7. Disconnect two air conditioning condenser hoses (10). Cap and plug open connections immediately. 8. Remove four hydraulic cooler mount bolts (12). Remove the remaining twelve bolts that secure channel assembly (11) to the radiator guard assembly. Remove channel assembly (11). 9. Support air conditioning condenser assembly (13) with a nylon strap and hoist as shown. 10. Remove two bolts (14) and (15) that secure air conditioning condenser assembly (13) to the radiator guard assembly. 11. Remove air conditioning condenser assembly (13) with hoist and a nylon lifting strap. Install in reverse order.12. Fill the radiator with the proper type and quantity of coolant. Consult the Operation and maintenance Manual for coolant information.13. Fill the hydraulic tank with the proper type and quantity of hydraulic fluid. Consult the Operation and maintenance Manual for hydraulic information. The preferred method for charging any air conditioning system is to recover the refrigerant, evacuate the system and charge the system with the correct amount of refrigerant. The correct charge amount of refrigerant is 3.8 kg (8.4 lb).14. Evacuate and Charge the air conditioning system.
