P1 ECM connectorTest Step 1. Inspect Electrical Connectors and Wiring
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF/RESET position.
Thoroughly inspect the J1/P1 ECM connector, the J3/P3 machine connector, and any other connectors in the circuit. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Check the harness and wiring for corrosion, abrasion, and pinch points from the throttle switch to the ECM.Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are completely inserted and coupled. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion, and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The wiring and the connectors appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - There is a problem with the wiring and/or the connectors.Repair: Repair the circuit.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem. Stop.Test Step 2. Check the Status of the Remote Throttle
Ensure that the transmission is in the Neutral position. Apply the parking brake. Start the scraper engine. Place the throttle for the scraper engine in the low idle position.
Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) to the service tool connector.
Access the status for the "Remote Throttle Switch".
While the status is monitored, turn the remote throttle switch to the ON position.
While the status is monitored, operate the set/accel switch and the resume/decel switch.Expected Result:The status for the "Remote Throttle Switch" indicates "On" when the On/Off switch is in the ON position. The status for the "Remote Throttle Accel" indicates "On" when the set/accel switch is in the ACCEL position. The status for the "Remote Throttle Decel" indicates "On" when the resume/decel switch is in the DECEL position. Results:
OK - The status changed accordingly.Repair: The remote throttle is operating properly at this time.Verify that the requirements for the remote throttle were met prior to the problem. If the problem is intermittent, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect". Stop.
Not OK - There is a problem with the switch circuits. Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. Check the Switch Circuits at the Machine ConnectorNote: If all of the switches were inoperative, the problem may be caused by the return wire.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the J3/P3 machine connector.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
While the status for the remote throttle switch is monitored, use a jumper wire to connect the following terminals to J3:9 (Digital Return) on the machine connector:
J3:40
J3:36
J3:29
J3:30

( 1 ) The status for "Remote Throttle Switch" will indicate "Abnormal or Incorrect Data".Expected Result:The status for the remote throttle changes according to Table 1.Results:
OK - There is a problem between the machine connector and the switches.Repair: Reconnect the J3/P3 machine connector. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Not OK - There is a problem between the machine connector and the ECM.Repair: Leave the J3/P3 machine connector disconnected. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 4. Check the Switch Circuits at the ECM
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Insert a 7X-1715 Adapter Cable (Forty-Pin Breakout) and a 134-5195 Adapter Cable between the J1 and P1 ECM connectors.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.Note: The J3/P3 machine connector must be disconnected.
While the status for the remote throttle switch is monitored, use a jumper wire to connect the following terminals to J1:29 (Digital Return) on the ECM connector:
J1:13
J1:24
J1:14
J1:20

OK - There is a problem in the wiring between the ECM and the machine connector.Repair: Inspect the wiring for the remote throttle between the ECM and the machine connector.Repair the wiring or replace the wiring.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem. Stop.
Not OK - There may be a problem with the ECM.Repair: Temporarily connect a test ECM.If the test ECM fixes the problem, reconnect the suspect ECM.If the problem returns, permanently replace the ECM.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem. Stop.Test Step 5. Short the Wires at the Switch
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Disconnect wires for the remote throttle switches.
While the status for the remote throttle switch is monitored, connect the 998-BR (Digital Return) to the following wires:
F722-OR (On/Off (NC))
F719-BR (On/Off (NO))
F717-YL (Set/Accel)
F718-BU (Resume/Decel)
