Diagnostic Codes for Turbocharger - Clean
J1939 Code Code Description Comments
8631–17 Engine Turbocharger #1 Efficiency: Low – Least Severe The ECM has determined that the turbocharger efficiency loss has exceeded an intermediate threshold. Clean the turbocharger at the next service interval.
8631–18 Engine Turbocharger #1 Efficiency: Low – Moderate Severity The ECM has determined that the turbocharger efficiency loss has exceeded a severe threshold. Clean the turbocharger immediately to prevent loss of engine performance and turbocharger damage. Perform the following procedure if one of the diagnostic codes listed in Table 1 is active.Note: Only perform this procedure if the engine is equipped with a closed circuit breather. If any of the diagnostic codes listed above are active on an engine equipped with an open circuit breather, install the latest engine software. Refer to Troubleshooting, ECM Software - Install for the correct procedure.Disassembly Procedure
Remove the turbocharger. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Turbocharger - Remove" for the correct procedure.
Illustration 1 g06530948
Typical example
Place turbocharger (1) in a suitable support.
Place temporary marks in Positions (X) on the turbocharger compressor housing (5) and turbocharger back plate (10) for installation purposes.
Using a suitable tool, position pipe clamp (3) away from compressor housing (5). Disconnect hose (4) from the compressor housing.Note: Note hose clamp and hose positions for installation purposes.
Remove circlip (7) from poppet arm (8). Discard the circlip.
Using a suitable tool, pressurize wastegate capsule (2) to 138 12 kPa (20 1.74 psi). Remove actuator rod (9) from poppet arm (8).Note: Use a hand operated pump only – do not use equipment powered by shop air, this can cause irreparable damage to the turbochargerNote: Once the actuator rod is removed from the poppet arm release the pressure slowly.
Loosen bolts (6) by one turn.Note: Do not use mechanically driven tooling, use hand tools only.
Illustration 2 g06530952
Typical example
Use a soft faced tool to disengage the turbocharger compressor housing (5) from turbocharger back plate (10) in the direction indicated in Illustration 2.
Illustration 3 g06530953
Typical example
Support turbocharger compressor housing (5). Remove bolts (6) and remove the turbocharger compressor housing.Note: Do not rotate the turbocharger compressor housing as this will damage the anti-rotation pin (12).Note: Remove the turbocharger compressor housing axially to avoid damaging the turbocharger compressor wheel blades.
Remove O-ring seal (11) (not shown) from turbocharger back plate (10). Discard the O-ring seal.Cleaning Procedure

Required Tools
Tool Part Number Part Description Qty
A - Loctite Electronic and Part Cleaner 1
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect fluid with suitable containers before opening any component or disassembling any components containing fluids.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Illustration 4 g06530954
Typical example
Do not attempt using any brush or other methods for cleaning except the one specified in this procedure.Do not attempt to wipe the components with any cloth or towel as any fibers or parts of cloth will end up in other engine components.Do not spray cleaning agent directly behind compressor wheel.
Using Tooling (A) from a distance of 150 mm (6 inch). Thoroughly clean the turbocharger backplate (10) and turbocharger compressor wheel blades (13).Note: Ensure that there is no oil residue left on the components.
Illustration 5 g06530955
Typical example
Using Tooling (A) to thoroughly clean turbocharger compressor housing (5). Ensure that there is no oil residue in the volute (15) or inlet recirculation slot (14).Note: Ensure that there is no oil residue or cleaning fluid left on and in the component. Rotate the component in varying directions to ensure that excess cleaning fluid and debris are removed.Note: After cleaning is
