Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check the Fuel System for Leaks
A. Inspect the fuel system components for restrictions:
- Lines
- Tank
- Transfer pump
B. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel System Inspection" for additional information.
Leaks
Result: No leaks were found.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: Leaks were found in the fuel system.
Repair: Repair the leaks.
Verify that the problem is resolved.
2. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Check for an active associated code.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: An E1569, 1381, or 5417 code is active.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: Both an E1569 or 5417 and an E2172 or 1381 are active.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: An E2172 or 1381 is active.
Proceed to Test Step 8.
3. Check for Supply Voltage at the Clean Fuel Module Pump (CFM) Connector
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the wiring harness from the CFM pump.
C. Connect Cat ET.
D. Use Cat ET to perform the following override:
-"Electric Fuel Transfer Pump Relay Override"
E. Measure the voltage between the following pins on the CFM pump connector:
- Pin 2 and Pin 3
- Pin 2 and Pin 4
Voltage
Result: The voltage at the clean fuel pump module connector is equal to system voltage.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The voltage at the clean fuel pump module connector is not equal to system voltage.
Repair: There is a problem with the power supply circuit between the CFM pump connector and the battery supply. Check the circuit protection device, clean fuel module (CFM) relay, and the ground for the clean fuel module pump circuit. Refer to the appropriate wiring diagram to troubleshoot the circuit.
4. Inspect the Fuel Lines
A. Visually inspect the fuel lines between the fuel tank and the inlet to the clean fuel module. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel System Inspection" for additional information.
B. Inspect the fuel lines for the following:
-Restrictions
-Pinching
-Swelling
C. Check for plugged fuel tank vent lines or a plugged fuel tank suction screen.
Fuel Lines
Result: The fuel lines, tank vent, and suction screen are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The fuel lines, tank vent, and suction screen are NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace the damaged fuel lines.
Verify that the problem has been resolved.
5. Prime the Fuel System
A. Remove the air in the fuel system by performing a priming cycle.
B. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for additional information.
Priming
Result: The fuel system is primed.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Check the CFM Pump Pressure
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Remove the CFM outlet pressure sensor.
C. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the port where the sensor was removed from the CFM.
D. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
E. Connect Cat ET.
F. Use Cat ET to perform the following override:
-"Electric Fuel Transfer Pump Relay Override"
G. Monitor the fuel pressure on the gauge.
30 kpa - 150 kpa (4 PSI - 21.5 PSI)
Result: The CFM pump pressure is within specification.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
Result: The CFM pump pressure is not within specification.
Repair: A failed clean fuel module pump has been detected. Replace the CFM pump.
Proceed to Test Step 11.
7. Check for Proper Operation of the CFM Pump
A. Connect Cat ET.
B. Start the engine.
C. Allow the engine to run for at least 10 minutes.
D. Use Cat ET to monitor the following parameter in the status screen:
- "Fuel Temperature"
Note: The "Fuel Temperature" must be greater than 15° C (59° F).
E. Check for codes.
Note: Enablement conditions for this fault code require at least 10 minutes of engine run time, and fuel temperature must be greater than 15° C (59° F).
