The Caterpillar 3412C Generator Set Engine uses a microprocessor based electronic engine control. This control provides the following items:
Electronic governing
Automatic fuel ratio control
Torque rise shapingThere are two data links for communication. The first data link monitors the characteristics of the engine. The other data link provides diagnostic information. This engine has the following qualities.
Twin turbochargers in series
Jacket water aftercooled
Direct fuel injectionThe engine has a SAE No. 0 (zero) flywheel housing. This engine has dual viscous dampers. The engine is designed for either right hand service or left hand service. The engine is designed to fit within a 1220 mm (48 inch) width for oil well service applications. The engine has individual injection pumps and fuel lines. There is one injection pump for each cylinder. The injection pumps provide the following functions:
metering high pressure fuel to each of the fuel injector nozzles
pumping high pressure fuel to each fuel injector nozzleThe fuel injector lines are made of high strength steel and these lines have a collar flange. The collar assembly at the end of the fuel line reinforces the fuel line connection. The collar assembly also increases system reliability. The 3412C Generator Set fuel system is a system for high capacity. The following changes to the engine are listed below:
Increased area of the plunger
Camshaft with a longer stroke
Camshaft with a higher injection cycleThese changes influence the following items.
Significant increase in injection pressure
Increase in volume
Reduction in injection durationThis will yield the following benefits:
Higher power output
Cleaner combustion
Lower smoke levels
Improved fuel economyA full range electronic governor controls the fuel injection pump output. This maintains the engine rpm that is called for by the throttle position sensor. The cooling system has a gear-driven centrifugal pump. There are two thermostats which regulate the coolant temperature. A customer supplied fan drive and a cooling system (radiator) is required. The engine lubricating oil is cooled and filtered. The cooling oil for the engine is supplied by a gear-driven pump. Bypass valves provide the following benefits:
If the oil viscosity is high, there is an unrestricted flow of lubrication oil to the engine parts.
If the oil cooler is plugged, there is an unrestricted flow of lubrication oil.
If the oil filter elements are plugged, there is an unrestricted flow of lubrication oil.Starting the Engine
There is a slightly longer cranking period for an engine that is equipped with Electronic Controls than a mechanically governed engine. In order to move the rack, oil pressure is required for the electronic actuator. The check engine light should be ON while the engine is cranking. The check engine light should go OUT after the engine oil pressure is achieved. At temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F), starting fluid may need to be sprayed into the air cleaner inlet. If the engine fails to start in 30 seconds, the starter switch should be released. The starting motor should be allowed to cool for two minutes before being used again. Refer to Operation And Maintenance for the recommended procedure.Cold Mode Operation
The Electronic Control system performs a cold start strategy for the correct warm-up time after a cold engine start. A cold engine start is approximately less than 5 °C (40 °F). This cold start strategy is called cold mode. After being activated, this cold mode will increase the idle rpm to 900 to 1000 rpm until the engine is warmed. The Electronic Control system will periodically check the engine response. Once the engine is warm, the Electronic Control system will reduce the idle speed to 600 rpm. After the cold mode is completed, the engine should be operated at low rpm and at low power until the normal operating temperature is achieved. When the engine is running at a low rpm and there is low power demand, the machine will achieve the normal operating temperature more quickly than idling the machine during a no-load condition.Solenoid Override
A manual shutoff lever for the solenoid override is located on the side of the fuel pump. The engine can be shut off by rotating the manual shutoff lever in the counterclockwise direction. The shutoff lever is disabled by rotating the manual shutoff lever in the clockwise direction. If the solenoid has been disabled, the engine can be shut OFF by using the manual shutoff lever. The manual shutoff lever is located on the side of the fuel pump.
Personal injury or death can result from engine overspeed. If the engine overspeeds, it can cause injury or parts damage. Do Not operate the engine without the rack actuator solenoid (BTM) in place and with the fuel shutoff solenoid disabled.
Customer Specified Parameters
The Electronic Control system is capable of being programmed for several customer specified parameters. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for a brief explanation of each of the customer specified parameters.
