Caterpillar engines are identified with serial numbers, fuel system setting numbers, performance specifications and arrangement numbers. In some cases modification numbers are also used. These numbers are shown on the serial number plate mounted on the engine.Caterpillar dealers need all of these numbers to determine which components were included on the engine when it was assembled at the factory. The 3406 Marine Engines are available for applications in pleasure craft with planing hulls, patrol, pilot and harbor master vessels; customs, police and fire boats; yachts with displacement hulls, ferries and fishing boats. The engines can be mounted with various marine gears for vessel propulsion.These engines are designed to satisfy various power rating requirements by offering a hydramechanical governor and can be either direct injection turbocharged (DI-T) or turbocharged aftercooled (DI-TA). Identification of the combustion system used is attached to the fuel injection pump housing. The engines are available with SAE standard rotation counterclockwise (CCW when viewed from rear of engine).The engines are available in various arrangements with features including increased power ratings, larger air cleaners, an Air-Sep® air filtering system, relocated raw water pump and a regulator housing that incorporates de-aerators.A mechanical governor controls the fuel injection pump output to maintain the engine rpm selected by the operator. The injection pump meters and pumps fuel under high pressure to an injection valve for each cylinder. Automatic timing device advances or retards fuel injection to provide the best fuel injection timing over the full range of engine speed.The fuel ratio control, located on the governor, restricts the movement of the fuel rack, allowing only the proper amount of fuel to be injected into the cylinders during acceleration, to minimize exhaust smoke.Inlet air, filtered by an air cleaner, is compressed by a turbocharger before entering the engine cylinders. The turbocharger is driven by the engine exhaust. There are four in-head valves (two inlet and two exhaust) for each cylinder. The camshaft actuates the rocker arms and valves through mechanical lifters and push rods. The watercooled exhaust manifolds, risers and turbochargers are designed to minimize radiated heat in the engine room.The jacket water cooling system may use an expansion tank with a heat exchanger or keel cooling configuration. The engine is equipped with a gear driven centrifugal water pump. The engine coolant is circulated through the engine by passing through the oil cooler first, then to the engine block and head. A thermostat regulates engine coolant temperature by restricting coolant flow for quick engine warm-up, then opens to allow free circulation of coolant after operating temperature has been reached.Lubrication of the engine is accomplished by a gear-type pump and bypass valves. The pump provides full pressure lubrication to the engine internal and external parts.
