Unlock the latch that secures the hood. Raise the hood. Use the strut to hold the hood in the raised position.
Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali. At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.Remove filler cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and radiator cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Cooling System Conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Put identification marks on all lines, hoses, wires and tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses and tubes. This helps prevent fluid loss and contamination of the coolant system.

Trace hose (6) that is the overflow for expansion tank (1). For the purpose of installation, note the path of the hose. Pull the hose free of the machine.
Carefully remove cap (5) in order to relieve system pressure. Hold a suitable container under hose (7). Remove the plug from the hose and allow the coolant in the hose to drain into the container. Carefully tip expansion tank (1) in order to drain as much coolant from the expansion tank as possible. Install the cap onto the expansion tank. Install the plug back into the hose.

Tip expansion tank (1) in order to drain as much coolant from hoses (8) and (9) as possible into the expansion tank. Loosen the clamps in order to disconnect hoses (8) and (9) from expansion tank (1). Remove the expansion tank from the machine and drain any remaining coolant from the expansion tank into a suitable container.Installation Procedure
Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

Position expansion tank (1) onto the top of the engine. Reposition hose (6) for the overflow. Use the note that was made during the removal procedure to identify the correct path of the hose.
Position strap (3) over expansion tank (1) and install nuts (2), the washers, bolt (4) and the washer in order to secure the expansion tank to the machine.
Illustration 5 g00907731
Install the clamps in order to connect hoses (8) and (9) to expansion tank (1) .
Refill the expansion tank with the coolant that was drained during the removal procedure. Ensure that the coolant is free of contamination before refilling. Check the level of coolant in the expansion tank. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System - Check Coolant Level".End By: Remove the strut that holds the hood in the raised position. Stow the strut correctly. Lower the hood and use the latch to lock in place.
