Information:

DO NOT USE ETHER (starting fluids) unless specifically instructed to do so. If the engine is equipped with an Air Inlet Heater (electrically or fuel ignited manifold heater), DO NOT use ether (starting fluids) at any time. The use could result in engine damage and/or personal injury.
The ability to start will be improved at temperatures below 10°C (50°F) from the use of a cylinder block coolant heater or from other means that are used to heat the crankcase oil. This procedure will help reduce white smoke and misfire during start-up in cold weather.Note: If the engine has not been run for several weeks, fuel may have drained. Air may have moved into the filter housing. Also, when fuel filters have been changed, some air will be left in the filter housing. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" (Maintenance Section) for more information on priming the fuel system.
Place the transmission in NEUTRAL. Disengage the flywheel clutch to allow the engine to start faster. This procedure also reduces draining of the battery.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. The air inlet heater can preheat the system to improve cold weather starting. The air inlet heater is powered by a relay that is driven by the Engine Control Module (ECM). In cold ambient conditions, the inlet air heater will remain on longer to provide consistent engine starting.Note: The "AIR INLET HEATER" indicator lamp (if OEM installed) will flash for a minimum of 2 seconds regardless of the coolant temperature. If the "AIR INLET HEATER" indicator lamp flashes for more than 2 seconds, wait until the indicator lamp stops flashing (time is temperature dependant) before attempting to start the engine. This operation is the preheat cycle.
Push the start button or turn the ignition switch to the START position to crank the engine. Do not push the throttle or do not hold the throttle downward during engine cranking. The system will automatically provide the correct amount of fuel to start the engine. If the engine does not start after 15 to 20 seconds of cranking, release the key switch. Turn the key switch to the OFF position. Allow the starting motor to cool for 2 minutes. Repeat Steps 1 and 2. The "CHECK ENGINE/DIAGNOSTIC" lamp will flash during engine cranking. The lamp should turn off after proper engine oil pressure is achieved. If the lamp fails to flash, notify your authorized Caterpillar dealer. If the lamp continues to flash, the Electronic Control Module (ECM) has detected a problem in the system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Diagnostic Flash Code Retrieval" for more information on the engine diagnostics.
Release the key switch to the ON or RUN position immediately after the engine starts. After the engine starts, check to ensure that the transmission is still in the NEUTRAL position.
Oil pressure should rise within 15 seconds after the engine starts. Do not increase engine speed until the oil pressure gauge indicates normal. If oil pressure is not indicated on the gauge within 15 seconds, DO NOT operate the engine. STOP the engine, investigate and correct the cause.
Note: The "CHECK ENGINE/DIAGNOSTIC" lamp may come on after the engine is started. If this situation occurs, the Electronic Control Module (ECM) has detected a problem with the system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Diagnostic Flash Code Retrieval" for more information on the engine diagnostics.
Allow the engine to idle for approximately 3 minutes. Idle the engine until the water temperature gauge has begun to rise. Check all gauges during the warm-up period.Note: The oil pressures and fuel pressures should be in the normal range on the instrument panel. Do not apply a load to the engine or increase engine rpm until the oil pressure gauge indicates at least normal pressure. Inspect the engine for leaks and/or unusual noises.
After the ECM has completed the cold mode (or the cold mode is disabled), it cannot be enabled again until the ECM is powered OFF.
If the engine is operated with a low load, the engine will reach normal operating temperature sooner than idling the engine with no load. When the engine is idled in cold weather, increase the engine rpm to approximately 1000 rpm to 1200 rpm. This procedure will warm up the engine more quickly. Do not exceed the recommended rpm to increase the speed of the warm-up. Limit unnecessary idle time to 10 minutes.
