Troubleshooting can be difficult. On the following pages there is a list of possible problems. To make a repair to a problem, make reference to the cause and correction.This list of problems, causes and corrections, will only give an indication of where a possible problem can be, and what repairs are needed. Normally, more or other repair work is needed beyond the recommendation in the list.Remember that a problem is not normally caused only by one part, but by the relation of one part with other parts. This list can not give all possible problems and corrections. The service personnel must find the problem and its source, then make the necessary repairs.Troubleshooting Problem List
1. Gas Shutoff Valve Prevents Engine Start.2. Gas Shutoff Valve Fails To Stop Engine.3. Contactor Switch For Water Temperature Does Not Activate Gas Shutoff Valve.4. Contactor Switch For Water Temperature Activates At Wrong Temperature.5. Air Temperature Switch Does Not Activate Gas Shutoff Valve.6. Contactor Switch For Oil Pressure Does Not Activate Gas Shutoff Valve.7. Overspeed Switch Fails To Signal Shutoff.8. Overspeed Switch Signals Shutoff At Low Speed.9. Electrical Gauges Give Wrong Readings.10. No Output From Governor.11. Engine Has Slow Response To A Change In Speed Setting Or Load.12. Engine Speed Does Not Have Stability.13. Problem 1: Gas Shutoff Valve Prevents Engine Start Probable Cause:1. Gas Shutoff Valve Does Not Operate Correctly Activate to shutoff or activate to run type: Operate the control for the shutoff solenoid. Listen for a noise. A solenoid makes noise when it works. If it makes a noise but the engine still does not start, remove the gas shutoff valve. Problem 2: Gas Shutoff Valve Fails To Stop Engine Probable Cause:1. Wrong Connections Check connections and wiring.2. Valve Or Plunger Stuck Repair or replace valve or plunger.3. Diaphragm Damaged Or Ruptured Replace diaphragm. Problem 3: Contactor Switch For Water Temperature Does Not Activate Gas Shutoff Valve Probable Cause:1. Wrong Connections Check connections and wiring. Correct where necessary.2. Failure Of Gas Shutoff Valve Check the gas shutoff valve.3. Low Water Level In Cooling System Fill the cooling system.4. Wrong Setting Of Switch Make a test of temperature setting and if necessary install new contactor switch with correct setting. See specifications. Problem 4: Contactor Switch For Water Temperature Activates At Wrong Temperature Probable Cause:1. Wrong Setting Of Switch Make a test of temperature setting and if necessary install new contactor switch with correct setting. See specifications. Problem 5: Air Temperature Switch Does Not Activate Gas Shutoff Valve Probable Cause:1. Wrong Connections Check connections and wiring. Correct where necessary.2. Wrong Switch Make sure the switch with the correct temperature range is used for the application. See specifications. Problem 6: Contactor Switch For Oil Pressure Does Not Activate Gas Shutoff Valve Probable Cause:1. Wrong Connections Check connections and wiring. Correct where necessary.2. Wrong Setting Of Switch Make a test of temperature setting and if necessary install new contactor switch with correct setting. See specifications. Problem 7: Overspeed Switch Fails To Signal Shutoff Probable Cause:1. Incorrect Electrical Connections Check connection and wiring. Correct where necessary. See Wiring Diagram For Self Powered Shutoff System in the Wiring Diagrams section.2. Incorrect Setting Adjust setting or install new overspeed switch with the correct rpm range if necessary. See specifications. Problem 8: Overspeed Switch Signals Shutoff At Low Speed Probable Cause:1. Incorrect Setting Adjust setting or install new overspeed switch with the correct rpm range if necessary. See specifications.2. Wrong Setting Of Switch Adjust setting or install new overspeed switch with the correct rpm range if necessary. See specifications. Problem 9: Electrical Gauges Give Wrong Readings Probable Cause:1. Wrong Connections Check connections and wiring. Correct where necessary.2. Sending Units Have A Failure Check the sending units and install new ones if necessary.3. Resistor in 32 Volt System Has A Failure Install a new resistor.4. Wrong Sending Unit In System Install correct sending unit.5. Wrong Gauge Install correct gauge. Problem 10: No Output From Governor Probable Cause:1. Engine Cranking Speed Too Slow Make reference to Troubleshooting in Engine Testing And Adjusting.2. Bad Lubrication Oil Remove, drain and clean the governor. Fill governor with clean oil of the correct grade, and make sure to bleed any trapped air in governor oil passages.3. No Governor Oil Pressure Inspect the governor oil pressure relief valve. Make replacements if necessary.Inspect pump check valves and their seats. Make replacements if necessary.Inspect governor oil pump. Make repairs as necessary.4. Governor Drive Has A Failure Repair the governor drive.5. Fuel Control Linkage Has A Failure Inspect and adjust linkage. Make repairs as necessary. Problem 11: Engine Has Slow Response To A Change In Speed Setting or Load Probable Cause:1. Compensation Adjustments Incorrect Adjust needle valve and compensation pointer.2. Engine Has An Overload Decrease the load.3. Low Governor Oil Pressure Remove, drain and clean the governor.Inspect the governor oil pressure relief valve. Make replacements if necessary.Inspect pump check valves and their seats. Make replacements if necessary.Inspect governor oil pump. Make repairs as necessary.Fill governor with clean oil of the correct grade, and make sure to bleed any trapped air in governor oil passages.4. Problem With Engine Fuel System Or Ignition System Make reference to Fuel System or Ignition System in Engine Testing And Adjusting. Problem 12: Engine Speed Does Not Have Stability. Probable Cause:1. Compensation Adjustments Incorrect Adjust needle valve and compensation pointer.2. Dirty Oil In Governor Drain oil. Clean governor and refill with the correct grade of oil.3. Low Oil Level Add oil to the correct level. Check for leaks, especially at drive end.4. Air In Oil (Foam) In Governor Drain oil. Refill with correct grade of oil5. Too Much Play In Governor To Engine Linkage Repair or replace linkage.6. Governor To Engine Linkage
