3. Remove bolts (1) and pulley (2) from the water pump. 4. Remove bolts (3), water pump (4) and the gasket from the timing gear cover.Install Water Pump
Make sure the word "TOP" on the water pump housing is toward the top of the engine when installed.1. Put gasket (1) and water pump (2) in position on the timing gear cover.2. Install the bolts that hold the water pump in place. 3. Put pulley (3) in position on the water pump, and install the bolts that hold it in place.4. Put the vee belts in position on the engine.5. Fill the cooling system with coolant to the correct level. See the Maintenance Guide.6. Use belt tension gauge such as a Borroughs Tool Company Part No. BT-33-72C or equivalent, and make an adjustment to the belt tension. Tighten a new belt until the gauge indication is 535 22 N (120 5 lb.). Tighten a used belt until the gauge indication is 400 44 N (90 10 lb.). Used belt tension is for a belt which has more than 30 minutes of operation at rated speed of the engine.Disassemble Water Pump
START BY:a. remove water pump 1. Hold the impeller shaft with a wrench, and use an impact wrench to remove nut (1) from the shaft. Remove pump adapter (2). 2. Use tool group (A) and a press to remove shaft (3), the seal assembly and the impeller from the water pump housing. 3. Remove spacer (4) and seal (5) from the water pump housing. 4. Remove snap ring (6) from the housing with tool (B). 5. Remove spacer (7) and bearing assembly (8) from the housing. 6. Remove the seal from the water pump housing with tool group (A). 7. Remove impeller (9) from shaft (10) with tool group (A). 8. Remove water seal assembly (11) from the impeller shaft.Assemble Water Pump
1. Put a small amount of 2S3230 Bearing Lubricant on the seal lip, and install the seal in the pump housing with tool group (A). Install the seal with the lip toward the bearing assembly as shown. 2. Put 2S3230 Bearing Lubricant between the bearings. Put spacer (2) between bearing assembly (3), and then put bearing assembly (3) in position on a press.3. Put impeller shaft (1) in position, and push it into the bearing assembly. 4. Install tool (B) on the impeller shaft, and then put the shaft and bearing assembly in position in the pump housing. 5. Install tool (C) on the bearing assembly. 6. Install a suitable plate from tool group (A) on tool (C) as shown. Press the shaft and bearing assembly into the housing. Make an inspection of the seal at the impeller end of pump to see if the lip of the seal was pushed out or damaged. If so, make a replacement of the seal, and do Steps 3 through 6 again. 7. Install spacer (4) in the water pump housing. 8. Install snap ring (5) with tool (D). 9. Remove tool (B) from the water pump housing. 10. Put a small amount of clean engine oil on the seal, and install it in the housing with tool (C) and a suitable plate from tool group (A). Install the seal with the lip toward the bearing assembly as shown. 11. Install spacer (7) in the pump housing. Install pump adapter (6) on the impeller shaft.12. Put 9S3263 Thread Lock on the threads of the nut; then install the nut on the impeller shaft. 13. Put the pump housing in a soft-jawed vise, and use a wrench to hold the impeller shaft while the nut is tightened to a torque of 170 15 N m (125 11 lb.ft.). 14. Put water seal (8) in position on the impeller shaft. Put a small amount of clean engine oil on the seal. Install tool (E) on the seal; then push the seal into housing with a press.
Do not use a hammer or similar tool to hit or drive the seal in place. This will damage the seal.
If the impeller does not have two holes drilled in it near the center, see the article "Use FT1783 Fixture To Drill Vent Holes In Impeller" in Service Magazine dated February 28, 1983, Form No. SEBD1306.15. Install 5P7350 and 5P7352 Spacers (11) on the pump housing. Put impeller (10) in position on the shaft. Use the 5P7353 Spacer (9) and a press to push impeller (10) on the shaft until it just makes contact with the two spacers. Remove the spacers from between the pump housing and back face of the impeller. The 5P7350, 5P7352 and 5P7353 Spacers are all part of tool group (F).
During the installation of the water pump on the front housing, make sure the clearance between the vanes (impeller) and the front housing is .35 to 1.14 mm (.014 to .045 in.). If this clearance is not correct, it will effect the performance of the pump.
