J1939 Code and Description Comments
174-0
Engine Fuel Temperature 1 : High - most severe (3) The crank terminate relay is set and the engine has been running for at least 30 seconds. The temperature of the gas has exceeded the trip point and the delay timer has expired. There are no active codes for the fuel temperature sensor.
The engine operation is not immediately affected. However, if the fuel temperature continues to increase, the air/fuel ratio and the inlet air temperature can be affected.
The code is logged.

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the Fuel Temperature
A. Connect Cat ET.
B. Use Cat ET to monitor the following temperature:
- "Fuel Temperature"
C. Measure the temperature of the gas that is entering the fuel metering valve.
D. Compare the measurement to the "Fuel Temperature" reading in Cat ET.
Fuel Temperature
Result: The temperature of the gas entering the fuel metering valve is the same as the "Fuel Temperature" reading in Cat ET.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The temperature of the gas entering the fuel metering valve is not the same as the "Fuel Temperature" reading in Cat ET.
Repair: Repair or replace the fuel temperature sensor. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Sensor Signal (Analog, Passive) - Test" for additional information.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Inspect the Gas Pretreatment Equipment
A. Check for condensation.
Note: Any condensation in the gas will change the fuel energy content.
B. Make sure that the filter and the dryer for the gas operate properly.
Pretreatment Equipment
Result: The gas pretreatment equipment is not operating properly.
Repair: Repair or replace the gas pretreatment equipment. For information on gas pretreatment equipment, refer to the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) service information.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
