Information:
Obtain at PM Level 1
Obtain S O S samples at regularly scheduled intervals to monitor the condition and maintenance requirements of your engine. Each oil sample should be taken when the oil is warm and well mixed to ensure that the sample is representative of the oil in the engine crankcase and oil pan.Refer to PM Level 1, Every 250 Service Hour interval or consult your Caterpillar dealer for complete information and assistance in establishing an S O S program for your engine(s).S O S Analysis
S O S is composed of three basic tests: * Wear Analysis* Chemical and Physical Tests* Oil Condition Analysis Wear Analysis is performed with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The test monitors a given component's wear by identifying and measuring concentrations of wear elements in oil.Based on known normal concentration data, maximum limits of wear elements are established. Impending failure can be identified when test results deviate from the established norm. Chemical and Physical Tests detect water, fuel and antifreeze in the oil and determine whether or not their concentrations exceed established maximum limits. Oil Condition Analysis is performed via Infrared (IR) analysis. This test determines and measures the amount of contaminants such as soot and sulfur and oxidation to determine its condemning limits. Infrared analysis should always be accompanied by wear analysis and chemical and physical tests to assure accurate diagnosis.Infrared Analysis
S O S must include Infrared (IR) in the analysis. The oil samples should then be tested using Infrared as well as the standard chemical and physical tests to determine its condemning limits. The test results of the oil samples will then be used as a basis for determining the oil change interval for your engine, giving you the ultimate time between oil changes without the risk of engine damage.Infrared analysis should always be accompanied by wear analysis and chemical and physical tests to assure accurate diagnosis. Infrared analysis must be used to determine oil change intervals.Oil Drain Intervals
There are many circumstances when the proper conditions exist that may allow adjustment to the normal oil change periods.Extending oil drain intervals assumes the use of API CE performance oil, which has sufficient TBN for fuels with less than 0.5% sulfur. The fundamental requirement is to maintain the lube oil in an acceptable condition to provide continual engine component protection. The oil's ability to retain its protective capability is a function of the oil formulation.* All API CE classification oils do not perform equally. This section assumes a SUPERIOR QUALITY lube oil is used. A lower quality lube oil would require that the oil change intervals be reduced accordingly. If the sulfur content in the fuel is greater than 1.5% by weight, use an oil with a TBN of 30 and reduce oil change interval by one half the interval recommended in the Maintenance Management schedule. It is essential that an S O S analysis be performed to analyze oil condition before oil change period adjustment is considered.Due to manufacturing tolerances, engine application and maintenance variation, all engines do not consume fuel and oil at the same rate. Some history of fuel consumed and oil utilized for each engine or group of engines in a similar application must be established.
Drain intervals beyond 25,000 miles (40 000 km) are not recommended.
For more information on extending oil drain intervals, see to your Caterpillar dealer.
