Information:

Engine Storage (if Equipped with Aftertreatment)
If the engine will not be started for several weeks, the lubricating oil will drain from the cylinder walls and from the piston rings. Rust can form on the cylinder liner surface. Rust on the cylinder liner surface will cause increased engine wear and a reduction in engine service life.To help prevent excessive engine wear, use the following guidelines:
Complete all the lubrication recommendations that are listed in this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule" (Maintenance Section).
If freezing temperatures are expected, check the cooling system and DEF system for adequate protection against freezing. See this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities and Recommendations" (Maintenance Section). If an engine is out of operation and if use of the engine is not planned, special precautions should be made. If the engine will be stored for more than 1 month, a complete protection procedure is recommended. For more detailed information on engine storage, see Special Instruction, SEHS9031, "Storage Procedure For Caterpillar Products".Your Cat dealer can help with preparing the engine for extended storage periods.Aftertreatment Component Storage
Normal periods of inactivity will not require special attention to the SCR system. The SCR is designed to begin and end operation with the output of the power system the SCR is assembled to. Extended periods of inactivity or product storage will require preventative maintenance preparations up to, and including:
Purging the emission reduction system.
Shutting off the system prior to storage.
Cover or plug all inlet and outlet fittings.
Cover any exposed electrical connection fittings.
Protect the dosing cabinet from inclement weather.
Prevent water from entering the CEM.Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Circulation System
Disconnect electrical service to the DEF supply/circulation system if applicable.
Close all ball or gate valves within the circulation loop.
Shut off all ball valves to the dosing cabinets.
Close off ball or gate valves coming from the DEF (Urea) holding tank.Dosing Cabinets
The dosing cabinet will purge out any remaining liquids in the DEF lines.
Purge sequence takes 6 minutes. Thirty seconds into the purge cycle, put the switch back into the middle position. The purge cycle will continue until completed.
When purge is complete, turn off power to the dosing cabinet using the circuit breaker in the rear right of the electronics shelf.
Remove the DEF injector lance prior to the purge sequence.Note: If the unit is being taken out of service for an extended time and will be in extreme climates, drain all liquid from the cabinet. Empty liquid from dosing cabinet by removing the Y-sediment strainer and dosing pump supply line. Properly discard the DEF and clean the removed parts with deionized water.Removal of SCR Catalysts
Remove all fasteners from the inspection hatch.
Remove SCR catalysts from the reactor.
Remove catalyst from the housing by utilizing the removal tool. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly manual.
Remove cassettes and support grids.
Remove all insulation and foreign material before exiting the reactor.
Reinstall the inspection hatch.
Store the SCR in a clean and dry location.Catalyst SCR Storage
Prior to performing service on the catalysts, ensure that the catalysts have been properly stored.Catalysts must be stored indoors in a dry place. Exposure to water and subsequent freezing temperatures can cause cracks in the catalysts which would compromise effectiveness. Water can also transport dust, debris, and other contaminants into the microscopic pores of the catalyst. The temperature range for storage is −30° C (−22° F) to 80° C (176° F). The shipping pallets that the C280 catalysts are shipped on are not sealed.Store the catalyst on the side with the ceramic face exposed to minimize the risk of damage to the face of the catalyst. Cover the face of the catalyst to prevent debris from entering and contaminating the catalyst.Engine
Storage (Less Than One Year)
If an engine is not used, oil can run off the following parts that normally receive lubrication: cylinder walls, piston rings, main bearings, connecting rod bearings, crankshaft, and gears. This lack of lubricant allows corrosion to begin to appear on the metal. This condition is worse in areas of high humidity. When the engine is started again, metal to metal contact will cause wear before the surfaces receive oil. To minimize this wear, use the starter to turn the engine with the throttle in the FUEL OFF position. When oil pressure is shown on the pressure gauge, start the engine.
Clean the engine of any dirt, rust, grease, and oil. Inspect the exterior. Paint areas that contain paint damage with a good quality paint.
Remove any dirt from all air cleaners. Check all seals, gaskets, and the filter element for damage.
Apply lubricant to all points in this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule".
Drain the crankcase oil. Replace the crankcase oil and change the oil filters. For the proper procedure, refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change".
If the engine is equipped with an air starting motor, fill the reservoir with a mixture of 50 percent volatile corrosion inhibitor (<nomen>VCI </nomen>) and 50 percent engine oil.
Add VCI to the crankcase oil. The volume of VCI in the crankcase oil should be 3 to 4 percent.Note: If the engine crankcase is full, drain enough engine oil so the mixture can be added.
Remove the air filter elements. Turn the engine at cranking speed with the throttle control in FUEL OFF position. Use a sprayer to add a mixture of 50 percent VCI and 50 percent engine oil into the air inlet or turbocharger inlet.Note: The mixture of VCI can be added to the inlet by removing the plug for checking turbocharger boost pressure. The minimum rate of application is 5.5 mL per 1 L (3 oz per 1000 cu in) of engine displacement.
Use a sprayer to apply a mixture of 50 percent VCI and 50 percent crankcase oil into the exhaust openings. The minimum application rate for the oil mixture is 5.5 mL per L (3 oz per 1000 cu in) of engine displacement. Seal the exhaust pipe and seal any drain holes in the muffler.
Remove the fuel from the secondary fuel filter housing. Alternately, empty and reinstall the spin-on fuel filter element to remove any dirt and
