Information:

Safety
The safety section lists basic safety precautions. In addition, this section identifies the text and locations of warning labels used on the engine.Read and understand the basic precautions listed in the safety section before operating or performing lubrication, maintenance and repair on this product.Operation
The operation section is a reference for the new operator and a refresher for the experienced one. This section includes a discussion of gauges, switches, engine controls, attachment controls, transportation and towing information.Photographs and illustrations guide the operator through correct procedures of checking, starting, operating and stopping the engine.Operating techniques outlined in this publication are basic. Skill and techniques develop as the operator gains knowledge of the engine and its capabilities.Maintenance Section
The maintenance section is a guide to equipment care. The illustrated, step-by-step instructions are grouped by servicing intervals. Items in the "Maintenance Management Schedule" are referenced to detailed instructions that follow.Use the service meter or hour meter to determine servicing intervals. If your engine is not equipped with an hour meter, consult your Caterpillar dealer. Calendar intervals shown (daily, annually, etc.) may be used instead of service meter intervals if they provide more convenient servicing schedules and approximate the indicated service meter reading. Recommended service should always be performed at the interval that occurs first. Some photographs or illustrations in this publication may show details or attachments that may be different from your engine. Also, guards and covers may have been removed for illustrative purposes.Continuing improvement and advancement of product design may have caused changes to your engine which may not be covered in this publication.Whenever a question arises regarding your engine, or this publication, please consult your Caterpillar dealer for the latest available information. The operating sections outlined in this publication are organized to assist you with developing the skills and techniques required to operate your engine efficiently and economically. The Lubrication and Maintenance items are organized for a Preventive Maintenance Program. If the Preventive Maintenance Program is followed, a periodic tune-up is not required. The implementation of a Lubrication and Preventive Maintenance Management Program should minimize operating costs through cost avoidances resulting from reductions in unscheduled downtime and failures. The service interval for each item listed in the "Maintenance Management Schedule" is primarily based on the item and its relationship to either revolutions or load."Revolution sensitive" items such as water pumps, alternators, etc., are not primarily affected by the load on your engine during operation. Therefore, the service intervals established for "revolution sensitive" items are service hours."Load sensitive" items are primarily affected by the load on your engine during operation. Therefore, the basis for establishing service intervals for "load sensitive" items also includes liters (gallons) of fuel used as well as service hours, whichever occurs first. The best indicator for determining the service interval for "load sensitive" items is liters (gallons) of fuel used, since the amount of fuel used will vary with the load on an engine during operation. Generally speaking, the lower the load, the longer the engine life and conversely, the higher the load, the shorter the engine life.Caterpillar's Scheduled Oil Sampling (S O S) is the best indicator to determine what is happening inside your engine. S O S is used to determine component wear rates and oil performance.Wear metal analysis is performed to determine the amount of wear metals present in the oil sample. The results are then compared to previously established Caterpillar norms to determine acceptability. To be effective as an indicator, S O S must be performed on a continuing basis to established trend lines for a given engine.S O S testing also measures contaminants (such as water, fuel, ethylene glycol and soot) and oil degradation products (such as sulfur products, oxidation and nitration).More information on S O S can be found in the Scheduled Oil Sampling section (S O S) and also in the Every 250 Service Hours interval of this manual. The actual operating environment of the engine governs the maintenance schedule. Therefore, under extremely severe, or detrimental operating conditions, more frequent lubrication and preventive maintenance checks than specified in the "Maintenance Management Schedule" may be necessary. These schedules were developed for use to detect problems prior to engine component failure. Each level and/or items in each level should be shifted ahead or back depending upon your specific maintenance practices, operation and application. For example, if more than one engine is operated in the same environment, use the inspection, repair or preventive maintenance records of the first engine to aid in establishing the preventive maintenance schedules for the remaining engines. We recommend that these schedules be reproduced for ease of inspection. We also recommend that a maintenance record be maintained as part of the equipment's permanent record. See the "Maintenance Log" section of this publication for information regarding documents that are generally accepted as proof of maintenance or repair.Your authorized Caterpillar dealer can assist you in tailoring your schedule to meet the needs of your operating environment.Engine Identification
Caterpillar engines are identified with serial numbers, OT (fuel system settings) numbers and arrangement numbers. In some cases modification numbers are also used. These numbers are shown on the serial number plate mounted on the engine.Caterpillar dealers need all of these numbers to determine which components were included on the engine when it was assembled at the factory. This permits accurate identification of replacement part numbers.Ordering Parts
Quality Caterpillar replacement parts are available from Caterpillar dealers throughout the world. Their parts stocks are up to date and include all parts normally required to protect your investment in Caterpillar engines. When ordering parts, your order should specify the quantity, part number, part name and serial number, arrangement number and modification number of the engine for which the parts are needed. If in doubt about the part number, please provide your dealer with a complete description of the needed item.Engine Description
The Caterpillar 3516 Marine Engine is rated to provide maximum power for propulsion.A full range hydra mechanical governor controls the fuel injection pump output to maintain the engine rpm selected by the operator.Individual injection pumps, one for each cylinder, meter
