Crankshaft Main Bearings
Clean the crankshaft and inspect the crankshaft for wear and damage. Refer to Specifications, "Crankshaft" for more information.
Ensure that all main bearings, main bearing caps, and thrust washers are clean and free from damage. Replace any components that are worn or damaged.

Install lower main bearing shell (5) to lower main bearing cap (3). Note: The lower bearing is a plain bearing that has oil holes.
Install upper main bearing shell (4) to upper main bearing cap (2). Note: The upper bearing has a groove.
Lubricate upper main bearing (4) and lower main bearing (5) with clean engine oil.
Position the upper half of main bearing cap (2) in position on the crankshaft. Position the lower half of main bearing cap (3) in position on the crankshaft. Ensure the correct location and orientation of the bearing caps. The locating tabs for the upper and the lower bearings should be on the same side of the engine. Ensure that the dowels are in the correct position. Correctly positioning the bowels will ensure that the two halves of the main bearing caps are aligned.
Install bolts (1) and upper main bearing cap (2) to lower main bearing cap (6).
Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 52 N m (38 lb ft).
Rotate the main bearing cap assembly in order to ensure that there is no binding.
Repeat Step 3 through Step 9 in order to install the remaining main bearing.

For the rear main bearing cap assembly, install lower main bearing shell (11) to lower main bearing cap (8). Note: The lower bearing is a plain bearing that has oil holes.
Install upper main bearing shell (10) to upper main bearing cap (7). Note: The upper bearing has a groove.

Use Tooling (A) to install crankshaft bearing (15) to the cylinder block. Follow Steps 1.a through 1.c in order to install the crankshaft bearing.
Ensure that oil supply hole (18) is aligned with the oil gallery in the cylinder block.
Ensure that joint (16) is facing upward.
Ensure that chamfer (17) faces toward the cylinder block. End By:
Install the crankshaft assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft - Install" for the correct procedure.
