Diagnostic Trouble Codes
J1939 Code and Description     Conditions that Generate this Code     System Response
2813-5 Engine Air Shutoff Command Status : Current Below Normal     The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects low current in the circuit. The ECM can only detect this condition when the output driver is not activated.     The code is logged.
2813-6 Engine Air Shutoff Command Status : Current Above Normal     The ECM detects excessive current flow in the circuit. The ECM can only detect this condition when the output driver is activated.    When the ECM detects an engine overspeed condition, the outputs for the air shutoff solenoids are energized and the fuel injection is disabled. The air shutoff system is latched by the ECM. The keyswitch must be cycled before the ECM will allow the engine to be restarted. The output for the air shutoff solenoids can also be energized by the customer shutdown devices. When a customer shutdown is initiated, terminal 3 of the air shutoff timer becomes powered. The timer reacts by energizing the circuit that is connected to terminal 6 for 2.5 seconds. This circuit actuates the control solenoid for the air shutoff relay. The air shutoff relay powers the air shutoff solenoids and the shutoff mechanisms are closed. The 2.5 second activation time for the air shutoff relay prevents damage to the windings of the relay control solenoid. Also, when a customer shutdown is initiated, the ECM relay becomes energized. When the ECM relay is energized, power to the ECM is removed."Air Shutoff" OverrideA feature in Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) allows the technician to override the air shutoff solenoid in order to diagnose problems with the system. The override feature remains functional while the engine speed is zero rpm. Access the test via the "Override Parameters" screen on Cat ET.After the air shutoff mechanism has been tripped, a manual reset of the mechanism may be necessary.

Schematic for the air shutoff systemTest Step 1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
Remove electrical power from the ECM.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Verify that the air shutoff mechanisms are set to the OPEN position.

Air shutoff mechanism (3) Terminals at the air shutoff solenoid
Thoroughly inspect connectors (1) and (2). Also, thoroughly inspect connections (3) at the air shutoff solenoid. Check the circuit breakers for the air shutoff system. Reset any circuit breakers that are tripped.Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".

Terminal locations at the P1 ECM connector for the air shutoff system (P1-10) Air shutoff relay
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the circuit for the air shutoff system.
Check the allen head screw on each ECM connector for the proper torque. Also, check the allen head screw on the customer connector for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for the correct torque values.
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points from the air shutoff solenoid to the ECM.Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are coupled and/or inserted, and the harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The connectors and wiring appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - The connectors and/or wiring are not OK.Repair: Repair the wiring and/or the connectors. Replace parts, if necessary. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled. Verify that the problem is resolved.STOPTest Step 2. Test the Operation of the Control Solenoid for the Air Shutoff Relay
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.

Location of the test lamp to test the control solenoid
Remove the wire from the output of the air shutoff relay.
Connect a test lamp between the output of the solenoid for the air shutoff relay and engine ground.
Restore electrical power to the ECM.
Access the "Air Shutoff" override via the "Override Parameters" screen on Cat ET.
Activate the test.
Monitor the test lamp.Note: The timer for the air shutoff relay will only power the circuit for 2.5 seconds. The test lamp must be checked within this time period.
Deactivate the override.
Remove the test lamp from the circuit. Restore the wiring to the original configuration.Expected Result:The test lamp illuminated during the test. Results:
OK - The test lamp illuminated. The air shutoff relay is operating correctly. Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - The test lamp did not illuminate. No voltage is present at the output of the relay. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 3. Test for Voltage at the Air Shutoff Solenoid
Ensure that the keyswitch is in the OFF position.

Location of the test lamp to test for voltage at the air shutoff solenoid
Disconnect the wire from the positive terminal of each air shutoff solenoid.
Connect a test lamp between the wire for the positive terminal of the air shutoff solenoid and engine ground.
Restore electrical power to the ECM.
