Typical modules (if applicable)Test Step 1. Check for Connector Damage
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Thoroughly inspect the ECM connector J1/P1 and the machine connector J2/P2. Inspect all of the other connectors. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors" for details.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque of 2.25 0.25 N m (20 2 lb in).
Check the customer connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque of 2.25 0.25 N m (20 2 lb in).
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points.Expected Result:The connectors and wiring are free of the following problems: damage, corrosion, abrasion and incorrect attachment. Results:
OK - The connectors and wiring are free of any problems. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - The connectors and/or wiring need repair.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.STOPTest Step 2. Check Communications over the Cat Data Link.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Connect the Cat ET to the service tool connector J31.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Monitor engine operating conditions on the Cat ET. Verify that communications are established between the Cat ET and the engine ECM.Expected Result:Cat ET is able to establish communications with the engine ECM over the Cat Data Link. Results:
OK - Cat ET was able to communicate with the engine ECM over the Cat Data Link.Repair: Verify that Cat ET can communicate with the other modules in the system.STOP
Not OK - Cat ET was not able to establish communications with the engine ECM over the Cat Data Link. Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. Check the Voltage at the Service Tool Connector.
Disconnect Cat ET.
Measure the voltage between pin A and pin B on the service tool connector J30.Expected Result:The voltage measures 24 3 VDC between the pins. The voltage at the service tool connector provides power for the communication adapter. Results:
OK - The voltage measures 24 3 VDC between the pins. Proceed to Test Step 4.
Not OK - The voltage does not measure 24 3 VDC between the pins.Repair: Check the circuit that is providing power to the service tool connector. Refer to Illustration 1 for the correct pin numbers.STOPTest Step 4. Check for Shorts in the Harness
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Disconnect ECM connector J1/P1 at the engine ECM.
Disconnect all control modules from the Cat Data Link.
Disconnect Cat ET from the service tool connector J31.
Measure the resistance from P1-33 to P1-19.
Measure the resistance from P1-19 to the chassis ground.
Measure the resistance from P1-33 to the chassis ground.Expected Result:The resistance is greater than 20,000 Ohms for each measurement. Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than 20,000 Ohms for each measurement. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Not OK - The resistance is less than 20,000 Ohms for one or more measurements. There is a short circuit in the harness or in the connectors.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.STOPTest Step 5. Check the Resistance through the Harness.
Use a suitable piece of wire to create a short circuit at the cab service tool connector J31. Short J31-D and J31-E together.
Measure the resistance at the engine's ECM connector P1 between P1-19 and P1-33.
Measure the resistance at the connectors of the other control modules. Refer to Illustration 1 for the correct pin numbers.Expected Result:The resistance is less than 5 Ohms for each measurement. Results:
OK - The resistance is less than 5 Ohms for each measurement. The Cat Data Link does not have an open in the wiring.Repair: If the problem is intermittent, perform the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors".STOP
Not OK - The resistance is greater than 5 Ohms for one or more of the measurements. There is an open circuit in the harness or in the connectors.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.STOP
