Information:

The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program. Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.
This Program can only be administered after a failure occurs. The decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS0931" as the Part Number and "7755" as the Group Number. Use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.
This Revised Service Letter replaces the March 2, 1996 (Revised December 1997) Service Letter. Changes have been made to the TERMINATION DATE.

The engine may show signs of cylinder bore wear, such as high blowby through the breather and excessive oil consumption.
Excessive blow-by or oil consumption complaints must be evaluated and documented before exchanging the engine. Refer to the attached rework procedure for details.

The new cylinder block has additional material for machined mounting surfaces located just above the side cover nearest the flywheel housing. Two new water line tubes are available for such cases. The Remanufactured 0R4426 Engine normally has the earlier style cylinder block, but some remanufactured engines may be equipped with the newer style block.

Parts Disposition
The engines replaced with the 1109010 Engines will need to be returned to the Gosselies plant. Dealers will organize the return by batch at their best convenience to minimize the transportation costs, or at least once at the end of the program.
Refer to the Technical Information Bulletin dated November 4, 1993, comp code 1000 titled "Instructions for returning used engines to Gosselies" for more information on how to proceed.
Should the return of engines to Gosselies not be practice for custom or cost reasons, contact the Product Support Group at Caterpillar Belgium for further instructions.
Old engines replaced with Reman 0R4426 Engines will be handled following the regular practices on reman components.
Attach.(1-Rework Procedure)Rework Procedure
1. Inspect air intake piping joints prior to installing the engine. Clean inside of pipes and replace joint gaskets. Refer to Illustration 4 for location of the gaskets.2. Follow the Service Manual Procedures for exchanging the engine. Refer to Special Instruction, form SEHS9802-01 (06/96), "Installation of 0R4426 remanufactured 3116 Engines in 950F Wheel Loader".3. Two air compressor water tubes may need to be changed to clear extra bosses added to the newer style engine block. Remove 7E3595 and 7E6884 Tube Assemblies, and install the new tube assemblies (See Illustration 1). Replacement 1109010 Engines have newer style cylinder blocks that may interfere with the original air compressor water lines.
4. Refer to Illustration 2 for details if torque converter oil cooler line tube needs to be changed.5. Install new air cleaner elements (primary and secondary) when replacing the engine. Parts Needed are a 7W5317 (primary) and a 9S9972 (secondary) Elements if the machine is with a face seal air cleaner, 6I2501 (primary) and 6I2502 (secondary) Elements if the machine is with (or has been upgraded to) a radial seal air cleaner. If the machine is working in dusty environments and has a face seal air cleaner, it is recommended to upgrade the air cleaner to radial style using a 6I3831 Conversion Kit (reference Service Magazine article dated June 22, 1992), and to use a 1282686 high efficiency primary element (instead of 6I2501). Air cleaner elements and conversion kit are not claimable under this program.
Evaluating Engine Cylinder Block Wear
Crankcase Blowby
Blowby will be evaluated using the 8T2700 Blowby/Air Flow Indicator Group (refer to Special Instruction SEHS8712). A high blowby reading might be due to a defective component that has nothing to do with internal engine wear, like leaky inlet manifold gasket, passage of boosted air through turbocharger oil return line, leaky FARC diaphragm or defective air compressor. These points must be checked before to decide on engine replacement. Measurements will be made in torque converter stall conditions (engine speed at 2120 +/- 65 RPM), and with air compressor outlet line disconnected.
A blowby rate of less then 220 liters per minute is considered acceptable at any engine age. Such engines do not have the cylinder walls worn at a stage that justifies engine replacement.
If blowby reading is above 220 liters per minute, the oil consumption criteria MUST be used to confirm the wear in the engine.
Oil Consumption
The following fuel to oil ratios will be used to evaluate the wear in the engine. This criteria is to be considered as complementary to the blowby measurements described above.
These values represent the point at which oil consumption is considered to be excessive. Customer should monitor and document the fuel and oil additions for at least 3 to 4 weeks or a full oil change interval in order to establish a good average consumption, instead of relying on consumption estimates of only a few days. A report showing daily fuel and oil additions, signed by the customer, should be retained in the dealer file. See attached Oil Consumption Daily Log and Oil Consumption Test Report sheets as examples of documents to use.
In evaluating oil consumption,
