Information:
1. Remove oil fill tube (1) and turbocharger oil return line (2) from the right side of the engine block.2. Remove four access covers (3) from the right side of the engine block. 3. Turn off the fuel supply valve at the fuel tank. Remove fuel filter base and priming pump assembly (4) from the left side of the engine block. Plug or cap all openings to prevent contaminants from entering the system.4. Remove turbocharger oil return line (2) and tube assembly (5) from the left side of the engine block.5. Remove four access covers (3) from the left side of the engine block. 6. Remove the covers over the camshaft drive gears.7. Remove the bolt and plate (7) that fastens gear (8) to the camshaft. 8. Put the three washers from tooling (B) behind plate (7) and install the bolt and plate (7).
Do not apply more than 51675 kPa (7500 psi) pressure to 1P820 Hydraulic Puller. 8B7559 adapters are rated at 6 1/2 ton each and 1P820 Hydraulic Puller is rated at 17 ton at 68,900 kPa (10000 psi). If to much pressure is applied, the gear may be damaged.
9. Install tooling (B) on camshaft drive gear (8). Apply 51 675 kPa (7500 psi) to the puller and hit the screw part of the puller with a hammer until the gear is free of the camshaft taper. Remove tooling (B) and gears (8). 10. Remove bolts (9) and thrust washers (10) that fasten the right hand camshaft in the engine block. 11. Remove timing ring (6) from the left hand camshaft.12. Repeat steps 8 through 10 for the left hand camshaft gear and cam thrust washers. 13. Push valve lifters (11) into each cylinder head assembly. Position lifters (11) up and away from the camshafts. If necessary, O-rings seals can be used to hold valve lifters (11) in position.
Typical Example14. Remove covers (12) from each side of the front of the engine.
Typical Example15. Install tooling (C) on each end of camshaft (13). Tooling (D) can be installed on the flywheel housing to remove the camshafts from the rear of the engine, or it can be installed on the front drive housing to remove the camshafts from the front of the engine.16. Install tool (D) on the flywheel housing as shown.17. Install tool (E) on one end of tooling (C).18. Pull the camshaft out while rotating it with tool (E). Pull the camshaft out of the engine until a hoist can be fastened to it. Remove camshaft (13) from the engine. The weight of the camshaft is 42 kg (92 lb.).19. Repeat steps 14 though 17 for the remaining camshaft.Install Camshafts
Typical Example Make sure the camshafts are installed respective to the marks (rear Left Hand, rear Right Hand) on the ends of the camshafts.1. Put tool (A) in position on the flywheel housing as shown. Install the bolts that hold it. Do not tighten the bolts at this time.2. Fasten a hoist to camshaft (1). Install tool (B) and (C) on the ends of camshaft (1).3. Install camshaft (1) in the engine until tool (B) is located in the first cam bearing.4. Rotate the camshaft, and tighten the bolts that hold tool (A) to the flywheel housing.5. Rotate, and install the camshaft the remainder of the way. Remove all tooling.6. Repeat steps 1 through 6 to install the remaining camshaft. 7. Install thrust washers (3) and bolts (2) that fasten the camshafts into the engine block. 8. Put the valve lifters in position on the camshaft. 9. Use the following steps to correctly position both camshafts:a. remove timing pins (7) from their storage position.b. turn the camshaft until timing pins (7) can be installed through the cylinder block and into groove (9) in each camshaft. 10. Remove cover (10) and plug (11) from the lower right front of the flywheel housing. When rotating the engine with tooling (D), it must turn in a counter-clockwise direction, as seen from the flywheel to remove gear backlash. If the timing hole in the flywheel is missed, turn it clockwise a minimum of 30° before rotating it counter-clockwise.
Timing bolt (12) was removed with cover (10).
11. Put timing bolt (12) in position in the flywheel housing. Use tool (D) and a ratchet to turn the flywheel until the timing pin can be installed in the hole in the flywheel. The No. 1 cylinder is now at top dead center. 12. Put camshaft drive gears (13) in position on each camshaft.13. Install the bolt and timing ring (15) onto pin (14) and the left hand camshaft.14. Install the bolt and plate (16) onto the right hand camshaft.15. Use the following steps to seat the camshaft gears onto the tapered ends of the camshafts:a. Tighten the bolt holding timing ring (15) to a torque of 360 70 N m (265 30 lb. ft.).b. Use a soft hammer to hit the head of the bolt holding timing ring (15). This will help seat camshaft drive gear (13) the gear on the camshaft.c. Again tighten the bolt holding timing ring (15) to a torque of 360 70 N m (265 30 lb. ft.). Put a mark on the bolt and timing ring (15).d. Repeat Steps b and c until the bolt holding timing ring (15) no longer moves (the marks will stay aligned) after reaching the proper torque.e. Repeat Steps a through d to seat the remaining camshaft drive gear (13) located beneath the bolt and plate (16).16. Remove the timing pins from the camshafts. Install all timing pins in their original positions.17. Install the covers (1) in their respective positions.18. Install the gaskets and covers over the camshaft drive gears.19. Install the eight seals and access covers on the sides of the engine block.20. Remove timing bolt (12) from the flywheel. Install the plug in the timing hole. Remove tool (D) and install cover (10) on the flywheel housing. 21. Install the gasket and cover (17) on the engine front
