1. Check for Associated Codes
A. Establish communication between Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) Service Tool and the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
B. Download the "Warranty Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing any diagnostic trouble codes.
C. If any trouble codes are logged, troubleshoot the codes before continuing with this procedure.
Associated Codes
Result: There are no other associated codes.
Proceed to Test Step 2
Result: There is another code active.
Repair: Troubleshoot associated codes before continuing with this procedure.
2. Determine the code
A. Establish communication between Cat ET Service Tool and the engine ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, Electronic Service Tools if necessary.
B. Record the logged or active codes.
Codes
Result: The 4765-18 or the2165-2 code is logged or active.
Proceed to Test Step 3
Result: The 4766-18 or the 2512-2 code is logged or active.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
3. Check for Exhaust Leaks
A. Start the engine.
B. Check the exhaust system for proper installation.
C. Check for loose or broken exhaust joints.
D. Inspect the exhaust system between the turbocharger outlet and the tailpipe outlet for signs if an exhaust leak.
Exhaust Leaks
Result: An exhaust leak was not found.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: An exhaust leak was found.
Repair: Repair or replace the component causing the exhaust leak.
4. Perform an "Engine Throttle Valve Test" in Cat ET
Engine Throttle Valve Test
Result: "Engine Throttle Valve Test" completed successfully.
Proceed to Step 5.
Result: The "Engine Throttle Valve Test" did not complete successfully. There are more codes logged or active.
Repair: Troubleshoot the additional codes. Refer to Troubleshooting "Engine Throttle Valve - Test" for the correct procedure.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Perform a "Manual DPF Regeneration"
This test must be performed through Cat ET Service Tool.
A. Clear all diagnostic codes.
B. Start the engine. Allow the engine to idle for 3 minutes.
Do not use the operators switch for a stationary regeneration. Use of the Cat ET Service Tool provides enhanced diagnostics that are necessary for proper troubleshooting and repair.
C. Start a "Manual DPF Regeration" in Cat ET.
Successful Test
Result: The "Manual DPF Regeneration" completed successfully. There are no additional codes.
Return the unit to service.
Result: The "Manual DPF Regeneration" did not complete successfully. There are more codes.
Repair: Troubleshoot the additional codes. Refer to Troubleshooting for the correct procedure.
Verify that the problem is resolved.
Repair: A replacement Diesel Oxidation Catalyst Inlet Temperature Sensor may be required. Contact the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN) for further assistance.
6. Determine Fuel Quality
A.Take a fuel sample from the fuel tank. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, Fuel Quality - Test.
Fuel Quality
Result: The fuel quality is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
Result: The fuel quality is NOT OK.
Repair: Inform the owner of the equipment that Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel fuel must be used in order for the engine to operate properly.
Drain the fuel tank and replace the fuel with fuel that meets the specifications for the engine.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
7. Perform a "Manual DPF Regeneration"
A. Clear all diagnostic codes.
B. Start the engine. Allow the engine to idle for 3 minutes.

Successful Test

Result: The "Manual DPF Regeneration"did not complete successfully.
Repair: Replace the DOC temperature sensors.
Verify that the repair resolved the issue. Return the unit to service.
