Information:
Electronic Technician (ET)
For details on how to read and change parameters using ET, Communication Adapter Tool and the appropriate software, refer to the instructions included with the JERD2129 ET Data Subscription and the JERD2124 ET Software. ET consists of an IBM compatible computer and software. The software allows the laptop to program ECM parameters, read and display sensor values and switches, perform diagnostic tests and calibrate sensors.Electronic Control Analyzer and Programmer (ECAP)
Refer to Passwords for more details on how to obtain and use passwords. For details on how to read and change parameters using an ECAP, refer to Special Instruction SEHS9202 if using the NEXG4518 Challenger Engine Functions Service Program Module.Updating the ECM Personality Module using FLASH downloading.
Software inside the ECM is contained in a Personality Module. With Flash downloading, entry into the ECM to physically change the personality module is not possible. The Personality Module uses a FLASH memory chip. The ECM has the capability to reprogram the FLASH memory chip internally. This process is called FLASH downloading. Flash downloading is accomplished by connecting ET to the engine using the Communication Adapter Tool and transferring data from a disk drive on ET into the ECM.Check Customer/System Parameter
The ECM stores a code number in permanent memory called an interlock that is associated with each Personality Module part number. The interlock does not allow the engine to run if the wrong personality Module data is downloaded into the ECM. When a new Personality Module is FLASH downloaded or installed into the ECM, a (253-02) Check Customer/System Parameter (56) will be generated if the new personality module data does not match the last personality data used in the ECM. ET will warn you if you are flash downloading a file that does not match the last one in the ECM.ECM Fault (254-12)
The ECM continuously monitors itself internally for problems. If an internal problem develops the Diagnostic Code 254-12 ECM fault becomes active. This indicated that the ECM has detected an internal power supply or memory problem that cannot be fixed. The ECM must be replaced. Refer to ECM Replacement Procedure in this section.System Configuration
System Configuration Parameters are those that affect emissions or horsepower of the engine. They are programmed at the factory and would need to be reprogrammed if an ECM is replaced. Proper values for these parameters are stamped on the engine information ratings plate located on the valve cover or inlet manifold. Factory Passwords are required to change these parameters.Engine Serial Number
A new ECM should be programmed to match the engine serial number stamped on the ratings plate. A new ECM is delivered with the engine serial number programmed to 0XX00000.Full Load Setting
The Full Load Setting is the number representing fuel system adjustment made at the factory to "fine tune" the fuel system. Correct value for this parameter is stamped on the engine information ratings plate. This parameter must be programmed or a Diagnostic Code 253-02 Check Customer Or System Parameters (56) will be generated.Full Torque Setting
Similar to Full Load Setting. This parameter must be programmed or a Diagnostic Code 253-02 Check Customer Or System Parameters (56) will be generated.Vehicle ID
Identification of the machine assigned by the customer. Used only for customer reference, not required by the ECM.FRC Offset Value
The ECM determines a value based on atmospheric pressure that is used to adjust the fuel ratio control to minimize exhaust smoke when accelerating the engine. An Offset Value of -25 to +25 percent may be used to adjust from customer preference, fuel quality, or other factors that would affect engine performance.Personality Module Code
The Personality Module Code prevents the use of a incorrect personality module for this engine. Each horsepower family and emission certification has a different code associated with it. This code (stored in the ECM) MUST match that in the personality module or a Diagnostic Code 253-02 Check Customer Or System Parameters (56) will be generated and the engine will only run at low idle. When rerating the engine, programming this code to "0" will prompt the ECM to read and match its stored code to the Personality Module Code. Some vehicle systems, such as the cooling system or transmission may require changes when uprating an engine.Customer Specified Parameters
Customer Specified Parameters allow a customer to decide how an operator operates the machine. Some parameters may affect engine operation in ways an inadequately trained operator does not expect. These parameters may lead to power or performance complaints, even when the engine is performing to specification.Customer parameters may be changed repeatedly as a customer changes his operation or as new operators are assigned to a machine. Customer Passwords are required to change these parameters. The following is a brief description of the Customer Specified Parameters.Engine Power Rating Selection Number
The Personality Module defines the power family and may contain several ratings within that family. The rating number defines which rating is used (such as 325 hp, 1900 rpm or 325 hp,2100 rpm) within the family.Top Engine Limit (TEL)
Maximum engine rpm when the engine is under load. The engine will still achieve Rated RPM under no load conditions. TEL is dependent upon the RATING number, with some RATING numbers allowing little or no variation as specified below.

Factory Passwords
Factory passwords are required to perform each of the following four functions.1. Program a New ECM When an ECM is replaced, the System Configuration Parameters must be programmed into the new ECM. These parameters are protected by factory passwords.2. Rerate Engine to Another Engine Family This requires changing the Personality Module Code, which is protected by factory passwords.3. Read Customer Passwords If the owner loses his customer passwords, he will not be able to program customer parameters. Using factory passwords, one can read customer passwords, then use those customer passwords to program customer parameters.4. Clear Certain Diagnostic Codes Diagnostic Code 190-00 (Engine Overspeed Warning) requires factory passwords to clear once it is logged. Diagnostic Code 252-11 Incorrect Engine Software (59) also requires factory passwords. It
