Information:

The Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP) is powered by the 24 volts DC through J13/P13 Service Tool Connector. Use the following procedure to connect to the engine Service Tool Connector.1. The ECAP may be connected to the ECM at J13. Only one side of the T harness connector cable is used. Remove the cap on J13 and replace after testing has been completed.2. Connect the opposite end of the T cable to the ECAP.3. The ECAP will operate with the engine running, or with the engine OFF, power ON. If the ECAP does not communicate with ECM, refer to Section 3:P-310:ECAP Will Not Communicate With ECM.ACTIVE Diagnostic Codes
Diagnostic codes are used by the ECM system to warn the operator of a problem and indicate to the service technician the nature of the problem. Some diagnostic codes are used only to record an event, and do not indicate problems. An ACTIVE diagnostic code represents a problem that should be investigated and corrected AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Repairing the cause of an ACTIVE diagnostic code will cause the diagnostic code to be cleared from the ACTIVE diagnostic code screen. When an ACTIVE diagnostic code is generated, the Diagnostic Lamp will turn ON and OFF, blinking every five seconds. If the condition generating the diagnostic code occurs only for a brief moment, the Diagnostic Lamp will return to OFF after five seconds and the diagnostic code will be LOGGED. After a problem has been investigated and corrected, the related diagnostic code should be cleared from memory.Using The ECAP To Display ACTIVE Codes
A. Turn Engine Control Switch (ECS) to the OFF position, engine OFF and install an ECAP through the J13 Service Tool Connector (ATA data link).B. Turn Engine Control Switch (ECS) to the ON position, engine OFF (engine does not need to be started to view diagnostic codes).C. Refer to the Operating Manual and Special Instructions for the Electronic Service Tool (listed under Electronic Service Tools) to read the diagnostic code(s). The ECAP display menu will direct you to the proper screen to display diagnostic messages similar to the example below.ECAP Display Screen: ACTIVE Diagnostic Code Messages LOGGED Diagnostic Codes
When an ECM generates a diagnostic code, it usually logs the diagnostic code in permanent memory within the ECM. The CID-FMI and time the diagnostic code occurred (in hours on the internal diagnostic clock) is logged. The logged diagnostic codes can then be later retrieved or erased using an ECAP Electronic Service Tool. The logged diagnostic codes can be a valuable indicator when troubleshooting intermittent problems. When investigating logged diagnostic codes, remember the following information.* The most likely cause of an intermittent problem is connections or damaged wiring. Next likely is the component (sensor or BTM, for instance). Least likely is the ECM.* Some diagnostic codes represent events, not failures. (i.e. 23-02 Excessive Engine Power [48]). Passwords are required to clear these events from the log.* Some diagnostic codes are both events and failures, and are associated with the Caterpillar Engine Monitoring system. These diagnostic codes are 100-01 Low Oil Pressure (46), 110-00 High Coolant Temperature (61), and 111-01 Low Coolant Level (62). Passwords are required to clear these events and diagnostic codes from the log.Diagnostic codes not requiring passwords to clear are automatically deleted after 100 ECM hours. To troubleshoot a LOGGED diagnostic code, refer to the procedure in this manual for troubleshooting the specific diagnostic code first (Troubleshooting With A Diagnostic Code). If symptoms continue, use the procedure for troubleshooting symptoms (refer to Section 3: Troubleshooting Without A Diagnostic Code).Using The ECAP To Display Logged Codes
With power applied to the ECM or engine running, follow the Operating Manual and Special Instructions for ECAP (listed under Electronic Service Tools) to view the diagnostic codes. The ECAP menu will direct you to the proper screen to display LOGGED diagnostic messages.Using The ECAP To Clear Logged Codes
Follow the Operating Manual and Special Instructions for ECAP to clear LOGGED diagnostic codes. The ECAP menu will direct you to the proper screen to clear LOGGED diagnostic codes. Diagnostic Terminology
Diagnostic Codes Cross-Reference Indexed By CID-FMI
Diagnostic Codes Cross-Reference Indexed By Flash Code
Diagnostic Flash Code Retrieval
Three lamp outputs are provided for diagnostics. A Diagnostic Lamp may be included with the engine. The Diagnostic Lamp indicates an engine diagnostic condition or an electronic governing/control system problem. In most cases a diagnostic code will be stored in permanent memory within the ECM. The diagnostic FLASH CODE may be retrieved using the Diagnostic Lamp. The Diagnostic Lamp is not required for engine operation, however it can be useful to determine Active diagnostic codes. The lamp will illuminate (ON) whenever the ECM is powered up (Engine Control Switch to the ON position, engine OFF) to test the lamp operation (self test). The Diagnostic Lamp will begin to flash after the five second self test. The sequence of flashes represent the Flash Code diagnostic message.Count the first sequence of flashes to determine the first digit. After a two second pause, count the second sequence of flashes to determine the second digit. Any additional diagnostic flash codes will follow (after a pause) and will be displayed in the same manner. Only Active diagnostic codes can be read in this manner. Logged diagnostic codes must be retrieved with the ECAP.
