Illustration 1 g00104545Do not allow unauthorized personnel on the engine when the engine is being serviced. Also, do not allow unauthorized personnel around the engine when the engine is being serviced. Engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your health. Always start the engine in a well ventilated area, and always operate the engine in a well ventilated area. If the engine is in an enclosed area, vent the engine exhaust to the outside.Use caution when the following components are removed:
the filler cap
the grease fittings
the pressure taps
the breathers
the drain plugsHold a rag over the filler cap or over the drain plug. This rag will help prevent the pressurized fluids from being sprayed or from being splashed. Also, follow these procedures when you work on an engine or around an engine:
Wear a hard hat, protective glasses, and other protective equipment, as required.
Ensure that all protective guards and all covers are secured in place on the engine.
Do not wear loose clothing around the engine. Do not wear jewelry around the engine. These items can snag on the controls of the engine or on the other parts of the engine.
Never put maintenance fluids into glass containers. Glass containers can break causing personal injury. Drain all fluids into a suitable container.
Use all cleaning solutions with care. Report all necessary repairs.Unless other instructions are provided, perform the maintenance under the following conditions:
The engine is stopped.
The protective locks or the controls are in the applied position.
Disconnect the batteries when maintenance is performed or when the electrical system is serviced. If the engine has electric starting motors, disconnect the battery ground leads. Tape the leads in order to help prevent accidental starting.
Do not attempt any repairs to the engine while the engine is running.
Do not attempt any adjustments to the engine while the engine is running.
Do not attempt any repairs that are not understood.
Use the proper tools.
Replace any damaged components.Stop the engine if an overspeed condition occurs during the initial start-up of a new engine or after an engine has been overhauled. This may be accomplished by shutting off the fuel supply to the engine and/or shutting off the air supply to the engine.Start the engine from the operator's station or from the start switch that is mounted on the engine. Never short across the starting motor terminals of the batteries. This could bypass the engine neutral start system. This could damage the electrical system.Pressurized Air and Pressurized Water
Pressurized air can cause personal injury. When pressurized air is used for cleaning, wear the following protective apparel:
face shield
protective clothing
protective shoesThe maximum air pressure for cleaning purposes must be below 205 kPa (30 psi). The maximum water pressure for cleaning purposes must be below 275 kPa (40 psi).Always wear eye protection when the cooling system is being cleaned. Pressurized water could cause debris to be blown out. Pressurized water could also cause hot water to be blown out. Therefore, unsafe procedures around pressurized water could result in personal injury.Fluid Penetration
When you check the engine components for leaks, you should use either of the following items for protection:
a board
cardboardLeaking fluid that is under pressure can penetrate body tissue. Fluid penetration can cause serious injury and possible death. A pin hole leak can cause severe injury. If fluid is injected into the skin, seek treatment immediately. Seek treatment from a doctor that is familiar with this type of injury.Fluid Spillage
Care must be taken in order to ensure that the fluids are properly contained during any of the following procedures:
inspection
maintenance
testing
adjusting
repairPrepare to use a suitable container to collect the fluid before any compartment is opened or before any component is disassembled. Note: Refer to the Special Publication, NENG2500. This publication explains the materials that are needed for collecting fluids in Caterpillar engines and for containing fluids in Caterpillar engines. Dispose of fluids according to local regulations.Asbestos Information
Caterpillar equipment and replacement parts that are shipped from Caterpillar Inc. are asbestos free. Caterpillar Inc. recommends the use of only genuine Caterpillar replacement parts. Use the following guidelines when any replacement parts with asbestos are handled or any replacement parts with asbestos are handled. The asbestos in these components is usually bound in a resin, or asbestos is sealed in some way. The normal handling is not hazardous unless airborne dust from the asbestos appears.Avoid inhaling dust that might be generated when components that contain asbestos fibers are handled. Inhaling this dust can be hazardous to your health. If dust which may contain asbestos is present, there are several guidelines that should be followed:
Never use compressed air for cleaning.
Avoid brushing any materials that contain asbestos.
Avoid grinding of materials that contain asbestos.Remember to use a wet method to clean up asbestos debris. A vacuum that is equipped with a high efficiency particulate air filter can also be used. Also, follow these guidelines when you work with asbestos:
Use exhaust ventilation when parts that contain asbestos are machined.
Wear an approved respirator if there is no other way to control the dust.
Obey environmental regulations for disposal of asbestos.
Stay away from areas that might have asbestos particles in the air.Note: Comply with the applicable rules for the work place, and comply with the regulations for the work place. In the USA, use the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements. These OSHA requirements can be found in "29 CFR 1910.1001".Lines, Tubes, and Hoses
Avoid bending high pressure lines. Also, avoid striking high pressure lines.Do not install any of the following components if these components contain damage:
fuel lines
oil lines
tubes
hosesRepair any of these components if a component is damaged. Tighten any of these components if a component is loose. Leaks can cause fires.Inspect each of these components carefully. Always use a board when the engine components are checked for leaks. If you do not have a board, use cardboard when the engine components are checked for leaks. Tighten all connections to the recommended torque.Check for the following conditions:
end fittings that are damaged
end fittings that are leaking
outer covering that is chafed
outer covering that is cut
cut outer covering
exposed wire for reinforcement
outer covering that is ballooning
