Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check the Fuel Supply
A. Visually check the fuel level. Do not rely on the fuel gauge only. If necessary, add fuel. If the engine has been run out of fuel, purge the air from the fuel system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for the correct procedure.
B. Check the fuel lines for the following problems: restrictions, collapsed lines, and pinched lines. If problems are found with the fuel lines, repair the lines and/or replace the lines.
C. Check the fuel tank for foreign objects which may block the fuel supply.
D. Prime the fuel system if any of the following procedures have been performed:
• Replacement of the fuel filters
• Service on the low-pressure fuel supply circuit
• Replacement of unit injectors
Note: A sight glass in the low-pressure supply line is helpful in diagnosing air in the fuel. Refer to Testing and Adjusting for more information.
E. Check the fuel filters.
F. Cold weather adversely affects the characteristics of the fuel. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for information on improving the characteristics of the fuel during cold-weather operation.
G. Check the fuel pressure during engine cranking. Check the fuel pressure after the fuel filter. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel System Presure - Test" for the correct pressure values. If the fuel pressure is low, replace the fuel filters. If the fuel pressure is still low, check the following items: fuel transfer pump, fuel transfer pump coupling, and fuel pressure regulating valve.
Fuel Supply
Result: The fuel supply is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: The fuel Supply is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace any worn or damaged components.

3. Check for Electrical Power Supply to the ECM

Result: The ECM is receiving battery voltage.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The ECM is not receiving battery voltage.
Repair: Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Power Supply Circuit - Test".
4. Check the Starting Aids
Starting Aids
Result: The starting aids are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The starting aids are NOT OK.
Repair: Verify that the ether system is operating correctly. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Ether Injection System - Test".
5. Check the Engine Shutdown Switches
A. The engine shutdown switches must be in the RUN position in order to start the engine. Use Cat ET to verify the status of the shutdown switches. When an engine shutdown switch is used to shutdown the engine, the keyswitch must be turned to the RUN position for at least 15 seconds before restarting the engine.
Engine Shutdown Switches
Result: The engine shutdown switches are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: The engines shutdown switches are NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace the engine shutdown switches.
6. Check the Air Shut-Off System
A. Check the air shutoff mechanism. If an engine overspeed has occurred, the keyswitch must be cycled. There may be a manual reset for the air shutoff mechanism that is on the engine.

Result: The air shut-off system is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
Result: The air shut-off system is NOT OK.
Repair: Refer to Troubleshooting, "Air Shutoff System - Test" for information.
7. Check the Engine Speed/Timing
A. Crank the engine and observe the engine speed on the Cat ET status screen.
Note: Upon initial cranking, the status for engine speed may indicate that the engine speed signal is abnormal. This message will be replaced with an engine speed once the ECM is able to calculate a speed from the signal.
Engine Speed/Timing
Result: Cat™ ET displays the correct RPM.
Proceed to Test Step 8.
Result: Cat™ ET displays 0 RPM.
Repair: Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Speed/Timing Sensor Circuit - Test".
8. Check the Fuel Injectors
A. Ensure that the valve cover connectors for the injector harnesses are fully connected and free of corrosion.
B. Perform the "Injector Solenoid Test" on Cat ET in order to determine if all of the injector solenoids are being energized by the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Injector Solenoid Circuit - Test" for additional information.
Fuel Injectors
Result: The fuel injectors are OK.
Return the unit to service.
Result: The fuel injectors are NOT OK.
Repair: Replace the fuel injectors.
