P1 ECM connectorTest Step 1. Inspect the Throttle Lock Lamp Bulb and the Fuse for the Cigar Lighter
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF/RESET position.
Remove the bulb and inspect the bulb.
Remove the fuse for the cigar lighter from the main fuse panel. Inspect the fuse.Expected Result:The bulb is free from damage. The filament is free from damage. The fuse is OK. The contacts on the fuse and on the bulb are free of moisture and of corrosion. Results:
OK - The fuse and the bulb are OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - Repair: Clean the contacts on the bulb and/or the fuse.Replace the bulb and/or replace the fuse.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem. Stop.Test Step 2. Inspect Electrical Connectors and Wiring
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF/RESET position.
Thoroughly inspect the J1/P1 ECM connector, the J3/P3 machine connector, and all other connectors in the wiring harness. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Check the harness and wiring for corrosion, for abrasion, and for pinch points from the throttle switch to the ECM.Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are completely inserted and coupled. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion, and of pinch points. Results:
OK - Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - Repair: Repair the circuit.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem. Stop.Test Step 3. Test the Throttle Lock Lamp Circuit
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Start the engine.
Observe the throttle lock lamp.
Enable the throttle lock feature by switching the throttle lock switch to the ON position.Note: The throttle lock feature will not activate while the engine is below low idle. The throttle lock feature will not activate until the service brake pedal is released.
Observe the throttle lock lamp.Expected Result:The throttle lock lamp is not illuminated when the throttle lock switch is in the OFF position. The throttle lock lamp illuminates when the throttle lock enable switch is in the ON position and the engine speed is locked. Results:
OK - The throttle lock lamp is operating correctly. Stop.
Not OK - Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 4. Check for Active Diagnostic Codes
Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) at the service tool connector.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Check for active diagnostic codes on Cat ET.Expected Result:The following diagnostic codes are not active:
549-02 "Incorrect Throttle Lock Switch inputs"
248-09 "Cat Data Link Communications"Results:
OK - The diagnostic codes are not active. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Not OK - A diagnostic code is active. The throttle lock feature will be disabled by the ECM if there are incorrect throttle lock switch inputs.Repair: Further troubleshooting is required. Refer to Troubleshooting, "CID 549 FMI 02 Incorrect Throttle Lock Switch inputs" for more information. Stop.Test Step 5. Check the Status on Cat ET
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Operate the throttle lock switch.
Observe the status of the throttle lock switch on Cat ET.
Operate the service brake.
Observe the status of the service brake on Cat ET.Expected Result:The status of the throttle lock switch is displayed correctly on Cat ET, and the status of the service brake is displayed correctly on Cat ET.Results:
OK - The ECM is receiving correct input from both the throttle lock switch and from the service brake switch. The ECM is not illuminating the throttle lock lamp properly. Proceed to Test Step 6.
Not OK - There is a problem with the throttle lock switch and/or with the service brake switch.Repair: Replace the suspect switch. Refer to Electrical Schematic for more information.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem. Stop.Test Step 6. Check the Power Supply to the Throttle Lock Lamp
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF/RESET position.
Remove the throttle lock lamp.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Measure the voltage between the 111-YL wire and chassis ground at the throttle lock lamp.Expected Result:The voltage is between 19 VDC and 25 VDC.Results:
OK - The lamp is receiving the proper voltage. Proceed to Test Step 7.
Not OK - The lamp is not receiving the proper voltage.Repair: Verify that the fuse is not blown.Inspect the wiring between the battery and the throttle lock lamp.Repair the circuit. Refer to the Electrical Schematic for more information.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem. Stop.Test Step 7. Short the Lamp to Ground
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF/RESET position.
Use a suitable piece of wire to short the F707-WH wire to chassis ground at the throttle lock lamp.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.Expected Result:The throttle lock lamp illuminates when the jumper wire is connected to chassis ground. Results:
OK - The throttle lock lamp is operating correctly. Proceed to Test Step 8.
Not OK - The throttle lock lamp is faulty.Repair: Replace the throttle lock lamp.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem. Stop.Test Step 8. Check the Circuit at the ECM
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF/RESET position.
Install a 7X-1715 Adapter Cable As (Forty-Pin Breakout) between the J1 and the P1 ECM connectors.
Insert a jumper wire between terminal 27 (throttle lock lamp) and terminal 5 (ground) on the breakout T.Expected Result:The throttle lock lamp illuminates when the jumper wire is installed. Results:
OK - The ECM may not be providing a proper ground path for the throttle lock lamp.Repair: Verify your results.Temporarily connect a test ECM.If the test ECM fixes the problem, reconnect the suspect ECM.If the problem returns, replace the ECM.Refer to Troubleshooting, "Replacing the ECM" before replacing the ECM.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem. Stop.
Not OK - There is an open circuit in the harness or in the connectors between the ECM and the throttle lock lamp.Repair: Repair the circuit. Refer to the Electrical Schematic for more information.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem. Stop.
