Information:
Factory Passwords
Factory Level Security Passwords are required to clear certain logged events or change certain parameters such as the Full Load Setting. Changes are restricted to authorized personnel. When the correct passwords have been entered, the changes will be programmed in the ECM. The logged engine events include:* High Engine Coolant Temperature* Low Engine Oil Pressure* High Injection Actuation Pressure* Injection Actuation Pressure System Problem* Engine OverspeedThe Electronic Service Tool Factory Passwords Screen will display ECM Serial Number, Engine Serial Number, Electronic Service Tool Serial Number, a Reason Code, and Total Tattletales. This information must be given to an authorized Caterpillar dealer to obtain the proper passwords. The passwords are controlled by Caterpillar and may only be obtained by an authorized Caterpillar dealer. Examples of the Electronic Service Tool Screens are shown in this section. The passwords are only good for one programming or clearing session. A different set of passwords will be required after exiting the Electronic Service Tool Screen.Electronic Technician (ET)
For details on how to read and change parameters using ET, Communication Adapter Tool and the appropriate software, refer to the instructions included with the JERD2129 ET Data Subscription and the JERD2124 ET Software.Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP)
For details on how to read and change parameters using ECAP, Communication Adapter Tool and the appropriate Service Program Module, refer to Special Instruction SEHS9343, Using The NEXG4521 Functions Service Program Module and Tool Operating Manual SEHS9264. The ECAP may not able to access all available parameters.Flash Downloading
Software inside the ECM is contained in a Personality Module (FLASH memory chip). FLASH is a memory technology used in the latest Caterpillar Electronic Control Modules. ET has the ability to FLASH download (reprogram) a Personality Module without physically removing the Personality Module from the ECM.FLASH downloading is the preferred method for updating the software because there is no risk of moisture entry into the ECM due to improper seal installation. However, if the appropriate computer (PC) and software (ET) are not available, the Personality Module can be physically removed and replaced.FLASH downloading is accomplished by connecting ET to the engine through the Communication Adapter Tool and transferring data from a disk drive on ET into the ECM. See the instructions included with the JERD2124 ET software and the JERD2129 ET Data Subscription for more information.System Configuration Parameters (268-02)
System Configuration Parameters are the parameters that affect emissions, power of the engine, or various features. They are usually programmed at the factory and in most cases never need to be changed. System Configuration Parameters must be reprogrammed if an ECM is replaced, but not if the Personality Module is replaced (unless the engine rating changes). Proper values for these parameters are stamped on the Engine Information Plate located on the valve cover or inlet manifold. The following is a description of the System Configuration Parameters. Changing parameters that are protected with factory passwords may void Caterpillar warranty.Engine Serial Number
The Engine Serial Number should be programmed to match the engine serial number stamped on the Engine Information Plate. The Engine Serial Number is not programmed on a new (replacement) ECM.Equipment ID Number
The Equipment ID Number should be programmed to match the Equipment serial number stamped on the frame. The Equipment ID Number is not programmed on a new (replacement) ECM.Full Load And Full Torque Setting
The Full Load and Full Torque Setting numbers represent the fuel system adjustments performed at the factory to fine tune the fuel system. The assigned values for these parameters are stamped on the Engine Information Plate for each engine. Factory Passwords are required to change these parameters.Status Information
Engine control parameters can be displayed on an Electronic Service Tool. Each parameter has a label to identify it and the current value of the parameter. Status information is continually updated and is arranged in a Screen format for ECAP or a Group format for ET.For convenience, several screens or groups have been predefined for the most commonly used parameters. These groups can be customized to display combinations of parameters as required. Some additional parameters not available on the predefined screens may be available on a customized screen. Refer to the ECAP Tool Operating Manual SEHS9343 or the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) Getting Started Manual for further information about programming status screens or groups. Example screens are shown in this section.Personality Module Mismatch Diagnostic Or Incorrect ECM For Application (253-02)
The ECM stores a code number in permanent memory called an interlock that is associated with each Personality Module part number. The interlock does not allow the engine to run (and potentially cause damage) if the wrong Personality Module is installed or FLASH downloaded into the ECM.ET will warn you if you are FLASH downloading a file that does not match the last one in the ECM. The interlock must be reprogrammed with ET to allow the engine to run with new software. For instructions on how to reprogram the interlock code, refer to Special Instruction SEHS9343. Installing the incorrect ECM software may void Caterpillar warranty. The 3408E & 3412E ECM and another Caterpillar ECM may appear to be the same externally, but are different internally and are not interchangeable. For example, a 3508B ECM can not be used to replace a 3412E ECM. The Interlock Code can not be reset if the wrong ECM is installed. If an incorrect ECM is used, an Incorrect ECM For Application Diagnostic Code (253-02) becomes Active and the fuel injection is disabled to prevent the engine from starting.Verify the correct ECM part number by checking the part number listed in the Parts Manual or by checking the last two characters of the ECM serial number. The correct ECM serial number ends with CF.ECM Internal Failure Diagnostic (254-12)
The ECM continuously monitors itself internally for problems. If an internal problem develops the Diagnostic Code 254-12 becomes Active. This indicates that the ECM has detected an internal power supply or memory problem that cannot be fixed. The ECM must be replaced. Refer to Replacing The Electronic Control Module in this section.
